About me:
Currently, I volunteer as President for the Pride Festival of Central PA. In this position I coordinate the responsibilities of the committee chairs and hold volunteers accountable for the implementation of the organization's goals. I network and partner with various businesses and community groups and ensure that the organization operates within its budget.
In my last position as an Assistant Branch Manager at Sovereign Bank, I was responsible for implementing the sales and marketing processes, ensuring operational integrity and coaching and training team members. I also participated on Sovereign Bank's Diversity Business Council and organized tabling events for the local branches. Prior to Sovereign Bank, I was employed by the Dutch Apple Dinner Theater as a Server, Bartender and Assistant Service Manager.
Prior to my banking career, I taught in a 4th through 6th grade Learning Support classroom at Annville Elementary School.
I turned innkeeper in 2001 by converting a private residence into an Award Winning B&B and am a sidebar contributor for the textbook "Travel and Tourism Public Relations: An Introductory Guide for Hospitality Managers" written by Dennis Deuchl of the University of Virginia.
I am a 1991 cum laude graduate of Millersville University with a degree in education. I am a Certified Front Desk Representative from the American Hotel & Lodging Association and I have my Food Safety Manager Certification.
I serve as President of the Board with the Pride Festival of Central PA and volunteer for groups that serve the GLBTQ community.
Who I'd like to meet:
The very first event that evolved into Pride Festival Of Central PA was called "Open Air," and was held on the Police Athletic Grounds(PAL) along Harrisburg's Linglestown Road. The event was held in the late 80s for two consecutive years. Organization of the event was led by the volleyball team that used the PAL Building on N. 3rd St. At the time, organizers discussed how people might be afraid or unwilling to attend a “Gay Pride” event in this region. After much collaboration, the organizers chose the name "Open Air," to represent the fact that the community could come together in the light of day. Pink helium balloons served as the “signal” at the otherwise unremarkable entrance the festival. The event next moved to Ski Round Top and was hosted at a private condominium community on a huge rolling stretch of grass. Eventually, the event moved to Harrisburg Area Community College and then to Harrisburg's Riverfront Park. According to Dan Miller, the first openly gay Harrisburg City Council member, the first actual Pride festival was held on Sunday, July 26, 1992.
The mission of the Pride Festival of Central PA is to increase positive visibility of the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender and Straight Ally community of Central Pennsylvania by providing opportunities to express and celebrate diverse perspectives, emphasizing acceptance of all individuals regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. The Pride Festival of Central PA promotes awareness of and showcases organizations available to the GLBT and Straight Ally community, provides a safe environment for people of the GLBT and Straight Ally community to celebrate their diversity, and supports local economic growth by partnering with the community and attracting individuals to Central Pennsylvania.
