The US Geological Survey said the second quake's epicentre was inland, about 150 miles (240km) south of Padang.

It reportedly damaged 1,000 buildings in Jambi, another Sumatran town.

The quakes came in the wake of a tsunami that hit islands in the South Pacific, killing at least 120 people. Geologists said the two events were not related.
