Justice for REBECCA WHITBY WRITIN BY THE WHITBY FAMILY On April 25 ,2009 at approximately 10:30 p.m., Rebecca WHITBY, a 23 year-old female college student in Cleveland, Ohio returned home (on Alhambra Rd.) after a dinner date which included a few drinks and began to play with her 2 year-old nephew. Within about an hour she would endure one of the most shocking instances of police brutality imaginable. She was punched, kicked, slammed to the floor both inside her home as well as outside onto the porch floor area, had an officer repeatedly attempt to slam the cruiser door shut with her leg, which was not fully inside, taking the brunt of the punishment. She was also tasered while handcuffed as 8-10 more officers (ALL WHITE) repeatedly taunted her and her mom with profanity and racial slurs. All this because her father, fearing she might drive her car under the influence of alcohol or at the very least leave the house at night under the influence, wanted a police officer to talk to his daughter about these dangers from a law enforcement perspective and called 911. The daughter, being a bit embarrassed by her mom's comment that her nephew probably shouldn't see her intoxicated, wanted to leave. It is pure insanity when rogue police officers brutalize citizens who've committed no crime and then charge those very citizens with assault on them! The mother also endured being handcuffed and threatened with arrest for obstruction for having the nerve to put herself between her daughter and a 200 pound officer who drew back and was about to punch her 127 pound daughter in the face! Keep in mind, neither mom or daughter have any prior police record. This is a tragic but all too common occurrence experienced by citizens (especially African-Americans) who come into contact with police officers who think they are above the law, not to mention the internal structure of a "law enforcement" system that caters to them. Both mother and daughter are now being charged. The daughter for assault on two male police officers, one female officer at the jail, and child endangerment. The mom for obstruction (putting herself between the officer's fist and her child's face.) Oh, did I mention that the 127-pound daughter, according to police reports that have been repeatedly modified, allegedly managed to take both male officer's service weapons while being beaten by them? She also has asthma. It should be noted that charges were not filed against Rebecca and her mom until after the family filed with the Office of Professional Standards and the Federal Bureau of Investigation exposing these officers' abusive behavior. We will provide more details in the days ahead. the family asks for your prayers and any help you may be able to give in assisting them with their legal defense.
