The 4 Ground Saxophone Quartet was formed in Vancouver in 2006 with the goal of performing a mix of original compositions and unique arrangements as well as some of the standard saxophone quartet repertoire in a variety of genres including jazz, funk, popular and classical music.
Our current repertoire list includes arrangements of tunes by Thelonious Monk, Bob Mintzer, George Gershwin, Herbie Hancock, Henry Mancini, Irving Berlin, Scott Joplin, Stevie Wonder, Jeff Baxter, Lennie Niehaus, Kurt Weill, Lennon and McCartney and others.
The group consists of four veteran Vancouver-based saxophonists:
Mike Spindloe – soprano and alto
Daniel Seguin – alto and tenor
Jorge Manzano – tenor and soprano
Kevin Arland – baritone
Members Bios:
Mike Spindloe; soprano and alto saxophones.
Mike arrived in Vancouver from Saskatoon in 2003 and since then has steadily established himself as part of the Vancouver scene. As a member of the tango/jazz duo Cantango (www.cantango.net), he recorded the CD “Duets and Trios” in 2005. He is also currently a member of the five-piece retro-swing group Cheap Suit Big Tie, the Brazilian/Cuban ensemble Mistura Fina, and as a guitarist plays “Poncho” in the Neil Young/Crazy Horse tribute band Live Rust. While in Saskatoon, Mike was alto saxophonist for the Saskatoon Saxophone Quartet for nine years and performed with the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra as well as many other ensembles. He received his Bachelor of Music degree in Saxophone Performance in 1991 from the University of Alberta in Edmonton.
Daniel Séguin; alto and tenor saxophones.
Daniel began playing alto saxophone at the age 13. After a couple of years of playing in high school, he began studying classical saxophone with Noêl Samyn at the Conservatoire de musique du Québec in Hull Québec where is also studied harmony with Pièrette Fromand-Savoie. In 1987, Daniel moved to Toronto to study at Humber College with Pat Labarbera, Don Johnson and Ron Collier where he studied Jazz performance and arranging. He has worked, performed and recorded with dozens of artist including Jeff Healey, Victor Wooten (Béla Fleck & The Flecktones), Ben Mink (K.D.Lang) and Denton Whited (The Philospher Kings). He is also an award winning film and television composer with credits that includes; Human Cargo (Gemini award), Murder Unveiled (Leo award), Just Cause and Cold Squad.
Jorge Manzano; tenor and soprano saxophones.
Jorge hails from Quintero, Chile and arrived in Vancouver in 2004. Initially self-taught as a saxophonist, he studied with Maestro Alejandro Vasquez before joining the Chilean Air Force as a musician and playing for 10 years as a member of various Air Force Symphonic and Big Bands. He is a veteran of several well-known Chilean ensembles, including Los Chavales, Los Andes Big Band and Juan Azua’s Universal Orquestras Big Band.
Kevin “Vern” Arland – baritone saxophone.
Kevin is that rarest of individuals, a Vancouver-area native. He began playing at an early age and went on to study at Capilano College. He is a long-time veteran of virtually every Latin music group in the Vancouver area – if you’ve seen the La Clave Orchestra or many others, you’ve seen Kevin anchoring the horn section on his ubiquitous baritone sax.
