I connect with the ball, the ball bounces to you, my opponent, my friend. You connect with the ball. And the ball bounces again.
We call him the King, or her the Queen, but are we not all subjects of this spherical object we call the ball? A circle, a cycle, a turn of events that we follow -- keep your "I" on the ball! 4 Square is a team sport.
Each of us surrenders to the flow of the game. The game lives while the ball is in motion. We keep the ball in motion by focusing our awareness on the ball; our separate fractured realities become one. The lines we draw, the boxes in which we stand are an illusion -- the ball is real. Circles always trump squares.
A slow predictable game is boring, a fast violent game dies quickly. We, the players, are the middle way: We include strangers into our play. We call ourselves out, more often than not, without a referee -- instead we use a basic system of honor and respect. We enjoy style; we allow the uniqueness of a player to supersede "the rules". We are creative, taking turns to re-invent the game with new rules, new moves, and new players. We settle differences peacefully. We play to have fun.
