About me: Hailing from the South Suburbs of Chicago IL, Laney Stewart is best known for penning and producing hits for some of the biggest names in music. Notwithstanding his individual production achievements, he is perhaps most notable for his keen eye and consistent track record in recognizing and developing unknown raw talent and turning that into extraordinary success. Self taught on the piano and drums, Stewart possesses both creative genius and exceptional business acumen. As a songwriter, music producer and entrepreneur, he has his hands in every aspect of the music business including production, publishing, management, and artist development.
After a prolific career composing musical jingles for Bud Light, McDonalds, Coco Cola and others, Stewart made the transition into writing for recording artists. Beginning in the early 1990’s, he formed Groove Asylum Music, co-producing songs with Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, and writing & producing for label heads Quincy Jones, Benny Medina, Sylvia Rhone, and legendary MCA Records executive Louil Silas. Early credits include: “Old School Lovin’” Chante Moore, “Never Let Them See You Sweat” Go West and “Candlelight and You” by Keith Washington f. Chante Moore. While sharpening his creative skills, he continued to fine-tune his business savvy. After relocating his company to Los Angeles, CA, he formed a publishing joint venture with Famous Music and signed writers, among them his then 16-year-old brother, Christopher “Tricky” Stewart, and songwriters Kuk Harrell and Sean “Sep” Hall. He brought his other younger brother Mark E. Stewart into the business as well. He and Mark worked with the young writers, developing their skills and growing the catalog which includes songs performed by Pink, Sisqo, Tyrese, and pop hits, “Who Dat” by JT Money, “Case of the Ex” by Mya, 3LW’s “No More” and B2K’s “Uh-Huh”. Additionally, he developed award-winning songwriters Sam Salter and Tab and mix engineer Kevin “KD” Davis.
In 1996 Stewart inked a co-publishing deal with Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds. It was by way of this winning relationship that Stewart worked with Madonna, Shanice, and Toni Tony Tone in addition to writing and producing songs for the feature film Soul Food. Also during this time he wrote and produced the top 10 hit “Last Nights Letter” for KCi & JoJo’s Quadruple platinum album Love Always.
In 1999 Stewart relocated to Atlanta GA to join his brothers as a partner in RedZone Entertainment and Triangle Sound Studios. RedZone became a fixture in the Atlanta market (Blu Cantrell “Hit ‘Em Up Style” Sole “4,5,6” and Kevin "She'kspere" Briggs “No Scrubs”, & “Bills, Bills, Bills”) and continues to be instrumental in Atlanta having become the hotbed of the Music Industry. Stewart eventually took over the position of president of RedZone overseeing the day-to-day operations of the company and keeping it active while other independent companies failed due to the diminishing music business climate. Managing his duel role as music executive and producer, Stewart continued his work penning and producing notable songs including, # 1 A.C. smash “Without You” by Charlie Wilson’s, and “Everything” which appears on multi-platinum selling B2K’s Pandemonium and Greatest Hits albums.
Stewart continued his entrepreneurship when he entered into another publishing joint venture with Peer Music, forming Morningside Trail Music in 2003. He discovered and then signed writer/producer Terius “The Dream” Nash. Under Stewart’s tutelage The Dream has developed into an award winning super writer/producer. His work includes songs “Shawty is the S*^!” and “Falsetto” for his own album, and “The Dream” has penned the chart topping hits “Umbrella Rihanna, “Bed” J. Holiday, “Touch My Body” Mariah Carey, “ Suffocate” J Holiday, “Moving Mountains” Usher, and “Just Fine” Mary J Blidge to name a few. A highly successful figure in the business for the last 18 years, Stewart currently manages both creative and executive roles, writing songs and developing new producers, songwriters and artists in Los Angeles, CA.
