CNN: Black in America
Hey guys. I wanted to comment on Allison's message from earlier.
I know everybody has been watching the CNN program 'Black in America'. A lot of time was spent on the question of fair and equal representation across various groups of African-Americans, mixed blacks, college grad blacks, female blacks, single mother blacks, etc.. And a lot has been said about continuous discrimination of African-Americans by white society and such.
My question is: Do you really think the issue is being considered inferior by white people, or do you think the real issue is us considering ourselves as being inferior??
Just wondering........because I truly believe that the most tragic legacy of slavery and years of discrimination is the fact that, even though African-Americans have won their freedom, the right to vote, and all other human rights, their self-image and self-confidence have been shattered and lost in the process. I believe that we carry along a sense of insecurity that is subconscious and therefore undetected or ignored.
How come 75% of black women are single mothers? How come 50% of those single mothers live in poverty with their children? How come the leading cause of death amongst black men between 16-25 is homicide? How come the leading cause of death amongst black women between 16-30 is AIDS?
I know the pressure is strong when you have to work three jobs just to survive. There's no time to be a positive role model to your kids, so they are raised by the streets. Teachers don't care because they are underpaid. And when people feel alone, lonely, in despair, they search for some kind of attention, somebody to care for, so they have kids, usually way to early and before they are stable themselves. So the cycle continues.
So again my question remains: Can we overcome our sense of inferiority by pushing aside all limitations of our immediate environment, and focus on ourselves and taking advantage of what's positive around us. Can we stay in school because that's where our future begins? Can we ignore all negativity from missing fathers to drugs around us, and look for a role model within ourselves, a dream or a vision that carries us through the madness?
I'm a believer in self-fulfilling prophecies, a dreamer, and somebody who knows that you are in charge of your own destiny. I know that some circumstances make it much harder for some than for others, but I also know that no matter what the circumstance, if you have a clear vision and the drive to follow it, there's nothing that can hold you back, no crack addicted parent, no abusive uncle, no lack of money, nothing!
But it all starts with our believe in ourselves. So let's not waste time discussing how a white person sees you or how society is set up for us to fail. Bottom line: there's no law preventing you from succeeding, so it's up to you to put the law down to succeed no matter what!!
Let me hear it, guys.
Keep smiling. :-)
Boris.

About me: OK, this is me. Boris Kodjoe, BK. All the fakers go home!!!
I'm still new to this, but I'm learning fast. Glad to be here chatting with you all. My little brother Patrick introduced me to this 'madness', and I haven't left since. I think I'm the last to find out about Myspace, and now I'm anxious to catch up. I've been in a Daddy-cave lately (one year and eight months, to be exact), been a bad friend, haven't called or e-mailed anyone back, haven't been out, haven't gone anywhere, since all I care about is my two little angels. Her name's Sophie and she was born on March 5th, 2005, and his name is Nicolas and he was born on October 31st 2006. They have changed my life for the better, changed me for the better, given me purpose here on this planet.
Now I'm bigger and better, smarter and wiser, more motivated and feeling invincible. Just because of this little girl and this little boy. Amazing!!!!
Now come and talk to me, lemme hear your story, give me some insight into your world, share your thoughts, tell me something good, ask me questions...whatever pops into your head. Can't wait. Bis bald. Keep smiling. Und Tschuess!
Who I'd like to meet: You, your friends, and your friends' friends. I believe that people enter each other's lives for various reasons. Some are meant to stay, some aren't. But every single individual serves a very specific purpose in your life. I'm sure you have a friend you call when you wanna laugh, then there's the friend you reach out to when you wanna cry, talk, vent, celebrate, or just sit in silence. There's people who are there to remind you of what not to do or be like! :-) And there's people who are in your life to test you or tempt you!
I always embrace everyone and see where our journey takes us. The only thing I do not compromise about is POSITIVE ENERGY! I don't mess with negativity! Life is too beautiful to waste it with BS. Shit happens! But you can live and learn.
That's why my mantra is: KEEP SMILING!!!...

I was reading a comment made by one of your fans who mention you were discussing the Neuro disorder, Spina bifida, in a recent interview. I am a med student and I have just completed a report for class project on congenital neurological disorders; just wondering what is your association with this disorder and whether there is any new information you can disseminate.
