Bio
BOB CRAWFORD RMCO MUSIC, Inc. 229 West 26th St. Suite 6A New York, NY 10001 212-255-2161 rmco_music@hotmail.com Bob Crawford, born in the Bronx, NY, is one of those rare people who combines musicality, scholarship, and business acumen into one seamless individual. After graduating from the University of Virginia in 1971 (Phi Beta Kappa/Magna cum laude) Bob embarked on his musical career full time. From being the Musical Director, Guitarist, and Vocalist for the National Company of Paul Sills' "Story Theatre"(1972-3) to the publishing of his music theory book "Symmetric Cycles" (Foreward by Mick Taylor--Rolling Sones/John Mayall) by RMCO MUSIC/Charles Colin Publications, Bob has been actively involved in songwriting, arranging, producing, and studio work as a guitarist and vocalist for the past 30 years. In 1975, Bob founded Josandra Rehearsal Studios in NYC which became the home of such celebrated musicians as Pat Martino, Larry Harlow, Sonny Rollins, Horace Silver, Mongo Santamaria, Slide Hampton, Sam Jones, Tom Harrell, Kevin Eubanks, Larry Coryell, John Abercrombie, Brand X, Tom Rush, John Hammond, Aztec 2 Step, Jocelyn Brown, Meat Loaf, Loretta Devine, and Roz Ryan among many others. In 1986 he acted as President of Lions' Den Recording in NYC until 1990 when he formed RMCO MUSIC, his full-service production, recording, publishing, and consulting company. Still active today RMCO MUSIC boasts such varied clients as Larry Harlow, Mick Taylor, Jocelyn Brown, Maxine Brown, Ron Richardson, Vickilyn Reynolds, Carl Hall, Beverly Crosby, and Vondie Curtis-Hall. In 1991, Larry Harlow (2008 Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award Winner and Latin Music Hall of Fame Member) recorded "My Time Is Now"("Mi Tiempo Llego") on the album of the same name, co-written by Bob Crawford and A. Dennis (Doc) Williams of the O'Jays released on Cache/Fania Records. In 2006, Maxine Brown (R&B Hall of Fame Member and Tony Award Winner) recorded anther of Bob's compositions "I Want To Be Loved" released on "From The Heart" (Mee Max Music, Inc.) He continues to write, publish, and place songs with other artists to this day. -

ANNOUNCEMENT for BOB CRAWFORD’S NEWLY PUBLISHED MUSIC THEORY BOOK ”SYMMETRIC CYCLES” NEW TOOLS FOR ADVANCED IMPROVISATION AND COMPOSITION FOR ALL MELODIC INSTRUMENTS I'm writing to announce the release of my newly published John Coltrane/Pat Martino-inspired music theory book "Symmetric Cycles" (Foreward by Mick Taylor -Rolling Stones/John Mayall) by RMCO MUSIC/Charles Colin Publications. “Symmetric Cycles" offers new ways of stretching the melodic and harmonic boundaries of Modal Jazz, Blues, Pentatonic Rock, Latin (Montunos, etc.) Reggae, World Music, etc., creating sound colors that will open your ears in ways you may not have experienced before. It also is extremely useful compositionally--connecting chords in very unique ways, adding emotional sound colors to original musical works. As a teaching tool, I believe it to be very valuable for advanced students as well as seasoned players. The "Symmetric Cycles" site offers a preview of several pages of the book. Here are 2 endorsements of the book by Larry Harlow and Bertha Hope: “Very rarely does a book on advanced improvisation come to be published that makes sense. Bob Crawford, whom I have had the pleasure to have worked with professionally and known personally for over 30 years, has written just such a book. If you are a true musician and understand “movement of sound” you will certainly learn and enjoy from his newest venture into the world of improvising/composing in “Symmetric Cycles”… Read and learn from this master Guitarist and Teacher.” Larry Harlow larry@larryharlow.com Lifetime Grammy Award Winner-2008, Latin Music Hall of Fame Member, Pianist, Composer, Arranger, Producer, Bandleader, Founder of the Fania All Stars, CEO Latin Legends, Inc., Lecturer, Music Educator “Standing on the shoulders of John Coltrane, Bob Crawford's innovative and mathematical approach to improvising and composing makes for one amazing musical adventure. Your diligence in implementing these concepts in various musical styles e.g. Modal, Jazz, Blues, Rock, World, etc. will lift your playing/writing to a higher and brighter level of complexity and sophistication. “Symmetric Cycles”- a true breakthrough!!” Bertha Hope-Booker berthahope@gmail.com Pianist, Composer, Arranger, Recording Artist, Bandleader, Music Educator “Symmetric Cycles” can be ordered by calling Charles Colin Publications at 845-680-6880 or through the website. Does anyone have any DIRECT contact with Professors, Associate Professors, Heads of Departments, etc. in music schools or colleges/universities with Jazz Departments or programs? Dear Mr. Portnow,
My name is Bob Crawford, President of RMCO MUSIC in NYC. I am writing to you to offer some alternatives to the realignment of the Jazz Categories that NARAS has seemingly adopted. I will elucidate point by point.
1) I believe that there should be 3 main categories (see 54th Grammy list)—Traditional Jazz, Contemporary Jazz, and Latin Jazz. The first 2 are self-explanatory. The elimination of the Latin Jazz category discounts the fact that it is a very distinctive jazz form, different from the first two. It also dismisses the work of such giants as Mongo Santamaria, Ray Baretto, Astrud Giberto, Stan Getz, Paquito D’Rivera, Dizzy Gillespie & Machito, Horace Silver, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Joao Donato, Bobby Sanabria, Tania Maria, Flora Purim, Chick Corea, Airto, all Brazilian Jazz, and all the young up and coming musicians, not all of Latino descent, who love to play this music. There are also so many Latin Jazz fans (including all the recent influx of Latinos in the US) who are consumers of this music that denying this entire category of music will greatly hurt music sales, which is contrary to the mission of NASAS as I understand it.
2) The inclusion of “Best Improvised Jazz Solo” is entirely too vague. Which instrument are you talking about…sax, trumpet, trombone, guitar (acoustic & electric), piano, drums, bass (electric & acoustic), etc.? If you want to narrow some categories, this one is the most expendable.
3) The “Best Instrumental Jazz Album, Individual or Group” category is redundant and can be included in one of the 3 main Jazz categories posited in my first point.
I hope that you take my suggestions in the spirit in which they were intended. That is, of inclusion and fairness, and the continued availavility and quality of the only truly American musical idiom widely disseminated, that being Jazz itself. Thank you for your time and consideration.
Best regards,
Bob Crawford, President, RMCO MUSIC
