I am a big geek. Deal with it. What else did you expect? I have an MS in Computer Science, I'm seriously thinking about going for a PHD. I am a programmer, and I work in IT. When I'm not studying or working, I'm either reading or writing about technology. This is my life.
Knowledge and education is everything. It's not about how many classes you took, or what was your GPA. It's about what you know and what you have learned. If you want my respect, tell me something I don't know. Talk about science, technology, philosophy and etc..
I love academia and I have deep respect for people who do academic research.
I feel the need to constantly learn new things, often beyond my field of study and expertise. If I'm not learning, I feel like I'm slowly dying.
I used to teach introductory computer classes for technological retards neophytes. I work in IT industry and I often need to deal with end users. People say that you need angelic patience and nerves of steel to do this type of job. This people are correct. Some individuals are just naturally dumb and need clue forcibly inserted into them. I just do it in a nice, mostly painless way.
I'm not a BOFH - I just don't have it in me. I really wish I was. I will inject lusers with clue though even if I have to trick them into actually learning. |

Who I'd like to meet:
I look for two things: sense of humor, and curiosity. People without the former treat life way to seriously. Without some humor you just get lost in a bland day-to-day existence. Lack of sense of humor almost always implies lack of imagination. Unimaginative, humorless people are just boring.
Natural curiosity is also very important. Why? People who are not naturally curious do not learn. Then we have to insert clue into them using a LART and you don't want that. Roughly 70% of what we IT people call "clue" is curiosity and willingness to learn. If you are not interested in learning new things, are you are either already senile, or a closed minded idiot.
Lack of curiosity, usually indicates lack of imagination which brings us back to sense of humor. It's all interconnected. |
