i think the current name for it is adult alternative. it went from punk to new wave to modern rock to alternative to adult alternative, so maybe tomorrow they'll attach a new label to it. heavy repeat offenders in the cd player are: over the rhine, dar williams, vigilantes of love, tom waits, cowboy junkies. i also enjoy the ramones, elvis costello, r.e.m., U2, blondie, nick cave and the bad seeds, warren zevon, the clash. and generally if the band is female fronted, i stand a good chance of liking them. examples include: drugstore, concrete blonde, joydrop, innocence mission, evanescence, sixpence none the richer. local favourites include: anne e. dechant, tracey thomas, alexis antes, robin stone, the trade. well, there's a start. of course, there's many more, and while that adult alternative banner comprises most of my music, nearly all genres are represented in my collection of albums. and did johnny cash just keep gettin' cooler and cooler up until he died? i think so.Movies
clockwork orange, cabaret, blue velvet/ eraserhead/anything david lynch, lost skeleton of cadavra, barton fink, big kahuna, 2001: a space odyssey, amelie/ foreign films, some documentaries. i'll watch most sci-fi, though so often they suck. i watch tons of movies through one of the big movie chain store's unlimited viewing programs, and many of them are just so-so. a recent pleasant surprise was You Me and Everyone We Know. i usually visit the imdb or the emily blunt movie sites *after* i view the film.Television
lately i've been doing teevee on deeveedee, because it gives you time to figure out what shows are really worth watching, which ones aren't simply sucking you in at the moment as teevee has the power to do. enjoyable teevee includes: dead like me, house, buffy the vampire slayer, farscape, arrested development, the L word, firefly, csi's franchise -- i prefer las vegas over miami over new york--. x files, sealab 2021, invader zim, the oblongs, food network has rachael ray and alton brown. i watch both of their shows. i like having the IFC channel, the Documentary channel, and the Boomerang channel. and what i really like is how when i *added* showtime, my dish bill went *down* by 5 bucks a month. shhh, don't tell them! i have *never* watched as much as a single episode of any survivor, i don't understand the reality teevee craze and i don't watch any, except i did rent the first disc of fat actress. it was compelling enough to draw me into all the episodes on the disc, but not so interesting that it made me want disc 2. my wife has been getting into lost, but i'm not hooked. i have seen more lost episodes than i thought i'd seen, i was rather surprised at that. much older teevee shows i still enjoy when they're on: astroboy, johnny sokko and the flying robot, ultraman, speed racer.Books
