Show of Hands, Steve Knightley, Phil Beer, Eric Roche, Jim Moray, Eliza Carthy, Dave Swarbrick, Richard Thompson, Stefan Grappelli, Martin Joseph, Paul Downes, Bert Jansche, Pentangle, Last Night's Fun, Feast of Fiddles, Eva Cassidy, Bob Dylan, Radiohead, Shave the Monkey... and a whole host of classical composers... whatever the influences, 5TH QUARTER say they do high energy folky / rocky/ jazzy stuff played with conviction and political umph.
Sounds Like
TIM CARROLL (Folk Words) wrote the following article about 5TH QUARTER:
Folk - fused or blended?
Investigating the various facets of folk I’m increasingly dragged into what I hear is folk-funk or folk-jazz fusion. Not sure about the need for another definition but 5th Quarter have got something good going on – folk fused with something else or not.
Singer songwriter Clive Whitburn writes and sings with an edge evocative of Ian Anderson and an attitude that slightly unsettles the listener. His rich voice invades your ears like warm oil, while multi-instrumentalist Jerry Bird entangles an intricate web of violin over and around the vocals. Sometimes Clive and Jerry take a direction you don’t expect but keep listening you’ll love it. They successfully blend a variety of styles to create a mellow yet sometimes spiky sound – listen to the ‘The 5th Quarter’ to see what I mean. Strange mix but ultimately satisfying. ‘Independent’ is another fine example and probably their most accessible song (and the claimed Stefan Grappelli influence is evident here). The lyrics have a precise cutting edge: “Got her own razor sharp tailor, gives her main stream respect. A screen siren with a conscience, she’s politically correct.”
We’re all different, with different musical backgrounds. Some want nothing but tradition others thrive on the eclectic nature of music. The essential truth is not what you do and how you do it, but that you do it with conviction – the 5th Quarter has conviction by the barrel - and they play some pretty good music too.

Poem 162 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse (please see my blog): TEES TO TYNE: FIRST IMPRESSIONS - SUMMER 2001
Where traditions are not so rare; Sea, country and works scent the air; A multitude of monuments, Planted tubs and patterned pavements.
The longish pedestrian malls; The remnants of defensive walls; Historic buildings are a gauge Of the respect for heritage.
Wheat, rape and pines in the fields; Estuaries guarded by shields; Long sandy beaches and wide scenes; Romantic-ruin go-betweens.
Rivers in parts licked by trees, Or fringed by boat clubs, wharfs, gantries, And crossed by practical delights - Varied spans, forming pleasing sights.
Fine churches headed at Durham; Football kits ad infinitum; Kept castles - one for study; Masonry behind masonry.
And, with moulding-works out that way, It’s somewhere for a longer stay..?

Poem 2 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse (please see my blog): WALKABOUT WITH MY PEN
Once drove an old sedan, up north, From a place in Sydney to Cairns; Then to Kuranda I went forth, By train, to look without set plans.
I browsed through the trendy market, With fresh fruits of tropical kind; Walked to the creek through lush thicket - Nature’s hand giving peace of mind.
I dined in a scenic cafe; Then, outside, as I wrote for yen, Some passing Kooris called-out: “Hey, You go walkabout with your pen.”
Request or question, I don’t know - Assured voices, elderly men. That’s now several years ago, And I’ve seen the world - with my pen.

If you have walked in the heart of the Greenwood and have bathed in the light of its living force remember what you have felt; and whenever you pass a tree whether it stands alone in a wilderness of human making or in the depth of woodland, give a moment of your time to listen to its voice. For in many parts of the land the trees are dying only the hearts that know something of the true wisdom can save them. (Anon)
Time to welcome in the Summer, health and happiness.
hey folks,
its been a while. Hope you are well my friend, pretty smooth time here in jolly London Town.
It took me ages, but I finally finished my album!
I uploaded it for a free listen on last.fm. If you fancy, have a listen and tell me what you think about it, you can find it at this link:
or just on last.fm if you digit 'trent miller & the skeleton jive' (for some reasons if you digit only 'trent miller' nothing comes out, still have to figure out how it works...)
I also worked on a proper release on my Hangman Records label, I think I will sell it at gigs and via post, it is a very limited edition of 500 copies.
Wow... I can't remember the last time we said hello... but I am sure it's been a long time. It's great to stop in and get re-acquainted with your music. "Gently Johnny" is beautiful!
