Interests

  • General

Chocolate. Trifle. Tea. Beer (nice beer). Anything that advances the Luddite cause. Irony too apparently. Coffee from anywhere but Kenya. Puppets. Candles. Prime numbers. Pasta. Colours. Urban renewal. Sprung rhythm poetry. Surrealism. Farce. Slapstick. Idiocy. And the last four are just how people describe me.
  • Music

It's a little eclectic. Almost odd. It's not that I don't know what I like - like so many other things it's that I can't categorise it. Sod it - last.fm profile That's what I've listened to since January. Plenty of good stuff in there. And lots of rubbish too. Special note for Nick Cave, CocoRosie, the Eels & the Divine Comedy though. Anything quirky is good. Current most played album (January 2007): Lisa Ekdahl's Med Kroppen Mot Jorden from 1996. I'll get around to doing a proper review of the "most played" sometime ("sometime" meaning "probably never").
  • Movies

Kind Hearts And Coronets. Casablanca. Yellowbeard. Arsenic & Old Lace. Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory. The Court Jester (or anything else with Danny Kaye on form). Roman Holiday (starring Hepburn, written by Trumbo, how could I not like it). Jeux d'Enfants (rent it, it's really sweet). And yeah, go on, Amelie. What Dreams May Come (it's one of the most visually striking moves I've seen). Anything from Ealing. Anything by Tim Burton except Planet of the Apes. Kevin Smith movies that don't include J-Lo. Bergman movies (Ingmar or Ingrid). Animated flicks that don't necessarily include a fart gag. Terry Gilliam movies but not the rubbish one. Anything done in lego. Stop-motion. Pib and Pog. .... ....
  • Television

  • Books

I like books. Unfortunately I never learned to read but they taste nice with an occasional glass of powdered milk. I've always loved Tess of the d'Urbervilles and Babe The Sheep Pig. One's about someone that attempts to overcome adversity in the face of all rationality to achieve dreams, the other's about a chick who gets fooled by some bloke who swears he's her cousin in order to get her to sleep with him. Not much difference there then. Amazingly Tess made me sad and Babe made me laugh. Go figure. Les Liaisons Dangereuses, Haroun & The Sea Of Stories, Midnight's Children, Les Miserables (but not the 200-page tangent on life in a convent as that was boring), I, Claudius, High Fidelity, The Moon Is Down and The Power And The Glory. And let's not forget Noddy And His Car - it was the best one and had a nice tasty yellow cardboard cover. Yummy. Last three things I meandered my way through before sleeping were Stephen Fry's The Ode less Travelled, David Mamet's True And False and Gabriel Garcia Marquez's Love In The Time of Cholera. I wish I had more reading time.
  • Heroes

You could be my hero. And if you believe that I've got a bridge in New York that I'd like to sell you. I'll swap it for that bag of magic beans you've got...

Blurbs

About me:

I've got two feet, two hands and one head. And a winning smile - it once won me a packet of dried apricots. Known to post as sceptre on boards.ie when I've too much time on my hands. The really bored can search every embarrassing thing I've said there or just use it as a stalking tool. If I've ever said anything bad about your cat or dress sense there, I'm truly sorry. Unless you've got an ugly-ass cat and your dress sense is even worse than mine. Music last listened to:

Who I'd like to meet:

People, but let's be honest here, we're probably talking people I already know but who don't know me well enough to know well enough to steer well enough clear. And friendly household pets (but not too friendly, I could do without having my leg humped by Fido or Rex or by Nemo the jiggy clownfish).
