Sandra Melody began djing at 12yrs old when she joined up with her mentor Mikey from the Scorcher sound system. When the selector from V rocket sound heard her he stated. ‘this little girl is the real deal’ . She was born in the England to Jamaican parents and raised in Bradford West Yorkshire. Her father encouraged her in the music as he had his sound system and an extensive collection of music. “My father is a ‘Maroon’ and that is something that I identify with very strongly, I believe this is where my musical strength comes from’. She would travel round the country with her crew as part of a five piece group called X-Elle who were known in the community for their dance troop. ‘The Djing was just another thing to do at that time for me’ I involved myself in anything to do with art and entertainment’.
When she moved to London her sisters boyfriend at the time Talliman introduced her to the DBC crew based in Ladbroke Grove where she would join them for 2 years recording, performing and Touring with the crew members Talliman, Clappers Priest, Shaka B, Louie Ranking and Tipper Dan to name but a few. At the same time she was still a member of X-Elle which started life as a five piece dance group now, became a three piece comedy trio under the management of Geoff Schumann (StreetCred Edutainment) performing along side acts like Collette Johnson, Jefferson & Whitfield, Richard Blackwood, Angie Lamar, Toju to name but a few. ………………………………......................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
Although she became very successful and was deemed for big things with the comedy trio she decided to follow her heart and that was to pursue her music career. Teaming up with Mafia & Fluxy on what was to be a demo vocal recording in the small hours of the morning ‘No Scrubs’ the reggae version of the Hit by TLC was birthed out and became a number one hit for her, but instead of this being the break she wanted after several recordings she faded away from the scene………………………………..........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
‘I stepped back from the Reggae scene because I felt that the so called business side of things at that time along with other things that were going on in my life were not in order and therefore I needed to find out what it was that I was trying to achieve and keep my integrity at the same time‘. So she took a back seat and while in the shadows continued to make featured appearances on tracks for independent labels like Big Dada, Ninja Tune, V2, Stanton Warriors, Yush 2K, Blackanized working with artists like Lotek Hifi, Roots Manouva, Rachid Taha, Part 2, Diplo among many many others. ………………………………..................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
I’m glad I took the time out to get my house in order and I believe that I’ve done that, now its time to make music on purpose………
