Very sad news in the world of music today...Tommy Makem was truly amazing and he will be very much missed...His songs & music will live on forever though...
That *is* sad news, Eve. I only had the pleasure of seeing him live once - back in Ireland, with Liam Clancy, but I'm so glad I did.
It's impossible to overstate the influence of Makem and the Clancies, if you start to think about the way they solidified traditional Irish music into a more neat, compact "pop" form, and then how that was would have influenced Bob Dylan in Greenwich Village. It was part of what made Dylan what he was, with his cataclysmic effect on the way we think about music, end even on the way we think and behave!
Very sad. This is the first that I've heard of it. His voice could light the way home for wayward sailors even on dry land. A truly great talent.
