In the beginning when the world was still raw and fraught with danger,
the
inequities of human kind were often settled with the cruel implements of the
battlefield.
The Swiss pikemen charged into battle in a formation wherein their
pikes protruded from the front of their phalanx, skewering their enemies.
The British placed the heads of their slain victims on pikes as a warning to
their adversaries. The tribes of Africa placed heads on pikes to show their
prowess in battle. Legend holds that Vlad the Impaler, a.k.a. Dracula
placed his victims upon a large wooden pike and let their own weight shove
the pike deeper until they died. He watched this "punishment" while he
dined.
All of these cultures and individuals have one thing in common. They
did not give a damn if others thought them barbarous or sadistic.
