About me:

I'm an author and singer-songwriter, celebrating that I just completed my debut CD with Ojos de Sofia titled Las 7 salves de La Magdalena. The CD release will be September 10, 2010, 7pm, at St. Mark's Church (East Village, NYC). More info on Raquel Z. Rivera and Ojos de Sofia: www.myspace.com/ojosdesofia.

I'm also the author of New York Ricans from the Hip Hop Zone (2003) and co-editor of the anthology titled Reggaeton published by Duke University Press in 2009.

A freelance journalist, my articles have been published in many magazines and newspapers, among these: Vibe, One World, Urban Latino, In the House Magazine, El Diario/La Prensa, Hoy, The San Juan Star, El Nuevo Dia and Claridad.

I'm hard at work on my first novel, a breakup story set to the sounds of Caribbean roots music, hip hop and reggaeton. As a singer/songwriter, I'm also a member of bomba group Alma Moyó, and a founding and ex-member of Boricua roots music group Yerbabuena and of the all-women's bomba and salve group Yaya.

I've taught courses in Sociology, Anthropology, Africana and Latino Studies at Columbia University, Hunter College and Tufts University. I am currently an affiliated scholar at the Center for Puerto Rican Studies at Hunter College.
