   About 7th Kind
7th Kind is a Chicago-based art rock band. We've been playing together since 2001, and over the years, we've developed our sound -- energetic music that is meticulously charted, yet inspired and accessible. Initially, our vision was unfocused. We wanted to play rock, as well as tunes which betrayed our jazz and classical influences. Our first gig was at The Mutiny, familiar to many a Chicago band that needs a first gig. Our set list included original arrangements of tunes by Horace Silver, Sergei Prokofiev, and Henry Purcell's Dido's Lament. Our gracious friends cheered us on while the regulars screamed for "Tom Sawyer," for some reason. We don't know why they picked us to cover their favorite Rush tune. After surviving some growing pains over the next couple of years, the band developed a sound that was unplanned and unforeseeable. The music started to come a little more effortlessly and we became aware of what we were trying to accomplish. We learned our particular craft at Chicago clubs like The Elbo Room, Beat Kitchen, and Wise Fools Pub. In June of 2004, we self-released a live studio album, Collapsing the Wave, and we are currently in the studio working on a new record, engineered by Michael Mullowney. We will release these recordings on Notethrower.com as they become available. For information on shows, new releases, and other good news, or to get on our email list, please visit our website, 7thkind.com.
