The concept for 7th Turning Hour (formally "When All Else Fails") started in early 2001 between buddies John Combs (Guitar), Alex Lockwood (Bass), and Alex Villarroel (Drums). The trio started off as pop-punk cover band taking inspiration from such bands as Blink 182, New Found Glory, 311, and Incubus. As the band started delving into the writing of original music for the first time, it was apparent that they needed a singer. Classmate and long time friend Jason Abbitt (Vocals) was recruited for the front man position in early 2002. Later that year, the 4 aspiring musicians pooled their savings and collectively dumped it on a low-grade home recording system. Not long after, the birth of their first self-produced 6-track EP entitled "Predictions of Ten" was on it's way. The pop/alternative rock release was completely 100% self-produced and marketted solely by the band, and over 200 copies of the EP were sold within the first month of it's official release. 7TH moved on that year to play a hand full of local talent shows at various high schools in the area, and were even invited to play in such venues as "The Grange" in Danville, and "In The Company of Wolves" in Benicia. Throughout the remainder of 2002-2003, 7TH became one with the local scene, sharing the stage on the regular with headlining local favorites "Wit's End", "Pocketfox", "Head Above Water", "Forthmorning", and "Hope Kills" (formally "Too Tired To Sleep").
As the seasons faded into the rise of 2004, 7TH decided it was time to seriously revisit the writing process once more. Most of the band members were entering their last year of high school at this time, and they didn't want to leave their numerous friends and fans in waiting for new material. For their next release, 7TH agreed that they needed to do something different; something more edgy and modern. A lot of ideas were brought up amongst the 4 musicians, but they all knew they couldn't do this next album right without some help. That year, good friend and local music store retailer Victor Rives (formally the guitarist of "Pocketfox") joined the band as a second guitarist. With the addition of Rives the band's musical energy increased dramatically, implicating double-lead guitar solos along with melodic riffs and bass lines that transformed the band into a completely seperate post-hardcore entity. The writing process went smoothly, and not even two months after Rives joined the band, they were ready to hit the studio. This time they employed the professional help of local producer/engineer Bill Mooney of Consumer Music Studios, and their first expedition into a real recording studio was officially underway. They recorded for several weeks, at which point Bill sent the "work in progress" demo to his people in LA who added the finishing touches of mixing and mastering. The six tracker that followed was self-titled "7th Turning Hour". Excited about the new release, the band immediatly jumped back into playing weekly shows, but even then, the writing process didn't stop.
Not even a year later, the band was gifted some studio time from friend and engineer Derek Jones, who took them into the Expression Recording Studios in Emeryville to produce another quick 3-track demo. The recording process this time was routine, and the band managed to knock out the entirety of the recording in just a few late night 8-hour sessions. This quick release was dubbed "The Expression Sessions" and was primarily handed out for free at local shows as a ploy to increase traffic on social music/networking sites such as MySpace. A lot of shows coupled with the release of this demo increased 7TH's popularity greatly, and booking shows became easier than ever. The summer that followed the band members graduation of high school was exciting to say the least, and could be considered the peak of 7TH's reign of popularity on the local scene. However, every party has to have an end, and this party was no different. Due to musical and personal differences, drummer Alex Villarroel left the band in early 2006, forcing the band to turn all booked shows into acoustic ventures as a 4 piece. After finishing off the remaining dates on their list of shows, 7TH went into an indefinate hiatus, and disappeared into the backdrop of the music scene. Over the next year that would follow, the band worked individually to expand their musical talents through formal lessons and writing sessions while simultaneously keeping their eyes open for a new drummer that would make their line-up complete once more.
At the end of 2006, almost a year later, Victor's old friend and drummer "Aaron Winter" (formally "Pocketfox") responded to an ad we had put out on Craig's List seeking a new drummer to jam with. Considering the fact that 7TH and Pocketfox played together all the time in their early days, everyone in the band knew that Aaron would be the new addition 7TH was looking for. It only took a few rehearsals to make the decision of making Aaron the new drummer for 7TH a reality. Aaron introduced a much needed "experimental" musical outlook to the band that forced the rest of us to think outside the box throughout the writing process. We began writing music for own enjoyment rather than catering to what everyone else wanted to hear, toying around with various odd time signatures and high tension chord progressions. After a grueling writing process that lasted for several months, the band was once again show ready, and had enough material to track a new EP. John Combs took on the role as the new official "booking agent" for the band, and got to work on lining up a solid cast of shows for 2007, as Alex Lockwood worked with mentor/prodcuer "Brian Mao" to set us up with some recording dates for the new EP. Recording the EP took longer than expected, and wasn't released until April of that year, but the band was very impressed with the results. By that time, 7TH was also back into the swing of playing weekly to bi-weekly shows, trying ever so hard to build back up the popularity they once had.
That year, "Year of the 7" was released in April, backed by a ton of shows and mini-tours throughout the entirety of California. In between these various shows, they did monthly gigs at Vallejo's own "OZcat Radio" in hopes of rekindleing the Vallejo rock scene to what it once was. The band still agress that some of these local hometown shows were some of the funnest shows ever played.
"The Year 2007 marked a lot of personal changes for 7th Turning Hour as a whole. This was the year that we all stopped taking things so seriously. We played a lot of shows that year, but we were just out there to have fun and share our music with the world. We weren't in it for the money or the fame; we were just in it because we were a group of friends who loved to write music together! For us, all that mattered was that we were able to look into the crowd at a show and see people with smiles on their faces. After the show, we'd pack up our equipment and party with those same people! Because they're the ones who were actually at the show to see a good live performance. I think Casey from The Dear Hunter/Receiving End of Sirens said it the best: He goes to shows to see good music, not to be scene. I couldn't agree more!"
~John Combs, 7TH
In 2008, the band continued to play shows while tracking more material at the Expression Recording Studios that were never officially released. They even used their original recorder that was used to track "Predictions of Ten" back in 2002 to lay down some rough recordings for new songs intended for a 2009 release that were never revealed to listeners. In late 2008, drummer Aaron Winter decided that he'd aspire to go to school in Hollywood for professional drumming. Seeing as how getting into the school was going to require a lot of work, and a lot of time, he decided that he wouldn't have enough time to drum for 7TH full time any longer. Around the same time, the lives of some of the other band members demanded that they work more hours at the their day jobs. With everyone's busy schedules, it was decided that the band would go on another indefinate hiatus. They're currently still writing, and do have plans on returning someday, but progress has been slow. The remaining band members are still writing and recording, and hope to have a new project going 2010. Until then the band members can currently be found slaving away at their day jobs.
