801 Projects' mission is to advance, promote and provide a space for contemporary and innovative artistic expression and develop and nurture progressive thinking, provide professional artist development services and facilities engaging the community with socially conscious art and community based arts education.
801 Projects is an arts center conceived in 2003 by local businesswoman Neli Santamarina and artist Carlos Betancourt. Over the last couple of years, artists have been moving into the 2nd floor of the historic Jose Marti Building located immediately south of the 8th Street exit off 1-95. In 2004, resident artists organized two events including THUNDER IN THE NIGHT to coincide with Art Basel Miami Beach 2005 and produced two successful happenings, experimental8: FIRST CALL and NEHMEN SIE DEN BUS ZU. In 2006, performance artist Octavio Campos moved in with his company Camposition, a contemporary performance group pushing the boundaries of performance art and activism. Since his arrival the space has begun to build an epicenter for LIVE performance in Miami. Since his tenure at 801 Projects, 15 public performances have occurred and over 70 artists have used the facility for rehearsals, lectures, photo shoots, film screenings, activist meetings, etc...
