Dark chamber
When darkness falls, imagine a line in blood starting at the Dungeon (you can probably find some available there), running through the skeleton of the dead Limelight, through the now empty cadaver of the Wave and the line will point to the roped entrance of the Pink Cadillac. Peer up the looming staircase and you can see the illuminations and shadows on the wall, the reflections of lace, leather, corsets and billowing frocks of the dancing gothatrons of O‘ahu. Climbing up, you’ve made it to level two. Welcome to Camera Obscura, Pink Cadillac’s signature gothic event.
Motivating the swirling romantic and cyber gothic dervishes, DJ Nocturna and DJ Du Nord ladle up a witches’ brew of ethereal, dark wave and death rock, subtly concocted to provoke the lusty crowd. Denizens of Honolulu’s mysterious yet gentle cyber and romantic Goth scene begged DJ Nocturna to bring the dark energy of her KTUH “Feast of Friends” radio program out to the masses. Teaming with DJ Du Nord, they delivered last month, conjuring up a romantic gothic revival with panache. This is an event the town’s leather-and-lace crowd has been looking for—you won’t find whips and chains here—this is about music and dancing. In addition to Nocturna’s spine-tingling Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy, and Hagen; Du Nord ramps it up with Switch Blade Symphony, Clan of Xymox and the Last Dance.
The Pink Cadillac has never been a center of style and class, but Camera Obscura works its magic. For two Sundays a month, the nice spread of appetizers, horror videos projected over the dance floor, music you don’t have to be Goth to dig and CD giveaways, obscures Pink’s otherwise dingy interior. For the uninitiated this is a place to listen and learn, an opportunity to hear old and new gothic sounds that, while watching some damn clever self-costumers strut their stuff. The beer is cold, and DJ Nocturna has ensured there is wine available. A goblet of ruddy wine is appropriate when you look like an extra in a ballroom scene in Pride and Prejudice. Last month Static Labs’ Tony and Jinny stopped by to talk up the upcoming 666 art show at the Mercury Bar. A few sororities and frats, hippy locals and assorted the-Wave-is-black-what-shall-we-do? castaways were enthralled, mingling on the floor to try their furtive fluid dance moves. It’s a welcoming Goth, and that’s a nice achievement.
Camera Obscura is a music, dance, club night event for the dark alternative lifestyle which takes place every first Saturday of the month at Next Door, located at 43 North Hotel Street in Honolulu, Hawaii.
