Writing, reading, tutoring, thwarting villainy, event planning, fundraising, matter, anti-matter, radioactive chambers, radio programs, billowing capes, horseshoes, scavenged materials, words, music, Scrabble, that short period of time right before it rains when it feels really humid, sidekicks, storytelling, bookmaking.

About me: 826NYC is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting students ages 6-18 with their creative and expository writing skills, and to helping teachers inspire their students to write. Our services are structured around our belief that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success. With this in mind we provide drop-in tutoring, field trips, after-school workshops, in-schools tutoring, help for English language learners, and assistance with student publications. All of our free programs are challenging and enjoyable, and ultimately strengthen each student's power to express ideas effectively, creatively, confidently, and in his or her individual voice.

We benefit enormously from the generosity of hundreds of writers, musicians, artists, comedians and performers who donate their time to perform and participate in our extensive series of fundraising events. All proceeds from the events directly fund student programs. The amazingly talented and generous people who have performed in past events include David Byrne, Sufjan Stevens, Todd Barry, Eric Bogosian, Stephen Colbert, David Cross, Jon Stewart and The Daily Show, Dave Eggers, John Hodgman, They Might Be Giants, Jonathan Franzen, Demetri Martin, Ira Glass, Nick Hornby, Jonathan Lethem, Rick Moody, Cynthia Nixon, Sam Rockwell, Jonathan Safran Foer, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Steve Buscemi, Sarah Vowell, John Oliver, Eugene Mirman, Yo La Tengo, and many more.
You can check out www.826NYC.org for more details on free programs for children, literary and music benefit events, and to learn how to volunteer. 826NYC and The Brooklyn Superhero Supply Co. are located at 372 5th Avenue in Park Slope, Brooklyn, near the 4th Ave./9th St. stops of the M, R, and F trains.
Who I'd like to meet: Students, parents of students, teachers, crimefighters, cape-wearers, and regular people too. No villains, please.
On Saturday, January 19, 2008, 826NYC will host SCRABBLE FOR CHEATERS, a tournament of verbal smarts and fraudulence. Teams of two compete in a tournament to determine the “World’s Best Cheater at Scrabble” and raise money for charity. Cheating is allowed, and encouraged. The more money raised, the more a team can cheat. The more a team cheats, the closer they are to glory. Sign up to play. Pledge money to your favorite team. Cheating is the only way to be champion.
On January 16th, 826NYC and Penguin Books present The Book of Other People: A Benefit Reading at Symphony Space. Zadie Smith hosts the event, which celebrates the US release of The Book of Other People, a collection of brand new stories by contemporary writers that benefits 826NYC. George Saunders and Vendela Vida will both read, along with very special guest Maggie Gyllenhaal!
Tickets are available online here or by calling 212.864.5400.
All proceeds from the book and the event benefit 826NYC's free writing programs for children.
Thanks for the add! Glad to have you as a friend!
Yours,

“Sit down before fact as a little child, be prepared to give up every conceived notion, follow humbly wherever and whatever abysses nature leads, or you will learn nothing.” - Thomas Huxley
Thanks for the add! We had a wonderful time at the Superhero Supply Store! Stay up to date on everything Cool in Your Code by visiting our page and tuning in Tuesdays at 8:30 on NYC TV, Channel 25!
826NYC is one of my most favorite places in the world. Where else can you find Infinite Space, sea floor, anti-matter, chaos (where results may be expected or unexpected), a secret vault, a full capery, books by my favorite authors, and children learning... all under one bright blue fire escape?? :-)
