ABOUT DEAD J's new ALBUM
Psychedelic Elephant is the title of the third album by Dead J. This is a play on words made by combining the two characters « ? » and « ? », which means "illusion" in the first place but also evokes a sort of mirage in the shape of an elephant. The confusion occurs if you consider the characters separately. This riddle is a logical continuation of Dead J’s tendency to choose brain-teasing concepts for his music.
Whereas “Mental Imagery” and “Mental Magic” came out as two pieces of dreamy electronica and charming soundscapes, Psychedelic Elephant takes things to the depths. The album starts on a haunting intro (Radian) that seems to release high frequencies like sand in an hourglass counting down to the last seconds before a trip into space. Space, Dead J’s music makes full use of it.
Sometimes opening wide eras like in Sometimes Incline or Dream dust with brain warming melodies (the two tunes with most reminiscent of electronica), sometimes narrowing to the extreme like in Fume and Radiance, creating a feeling of introspection, where roaring beats, layered synths, manipulated vocals whittle down to an infinite, dark path. The feeling is anguishing but addictive, insistent yet minimal. A track like Time 21 can easily put you on the groove to outer space with its heavy and persistent kicks, whereas Cold Light just freezes you.
Circle Composition and Rapid Eye Movement are the two most furnished pieces of the LP. They both have a progressive and heady axis, that melts with roving spectral synthesizers.
There is some warmth to be found in this 12 track odyssey, especially in almost waiting which comes out like a soothing ballad with its shy accordion.
…Psychedelic Elephant is an album of contrasts, made of cold and warm elements, a soundtrack you want to take with you into your personal time capsule.

i'm a former sinologist turned into a music activist. i'm the co founder and co manager of 86/33 LINK , a non-profit organization promoting music and organizing events in China, France and Europe. 86 refers to the international code for China and 33 is the code for France, which explains the main objective of the organization: to link up the two countries by creating a platform for independent musicians.
Besides my promoter activity, I write a bi monthly column about contemporary Beijing where I collaborates with photographer François Sebastiao, as well as a monthly page for Photo Magazine (France).
I'm also the agent of Chinese producer Dead J and when i have some time left i play records in small bars.
