  • Upcoming Gigs, Highlights from past gigs

    Current mood:energetic

Greeting all there in internet land! This is Joe, the resident drummer/keyboardist speaking. It's been a while since this site has had much of an update, so I'm here to talk about some highlights, and then a few gigs in the near future. I apologize for the length, but the most important stuff is at the bottom.

We've played a few gigs with the other teenage sensation that's gripping the nation, Cole Park. (http://www.myspace.com/coleparkmusic) They're all great guys, and we have a great combination of sounds that work well together. We played a private party with them and had a big old jam onstage, playing a 9 person version of Kids, among others.

None of the gigs were as strange or as wild as the Mumiy Troll gig, at the Cat's Cradle. Mumiy Troll is a band that's huge in Moscow, who decided to win some fans over in the United States. After wondering why in the world we were opening up for a big Russian band, we became very excited. We weren't let down. After hearing their drummer play his drums incredibly loud and well during their sound check, I got all fired up and d very well that night. After playing a smokin' set and winning over the crowd, we quickly unloaded, and got good seats for the main event. We weren't dissapointed. Mumiy Troll was the jam, and played with an incredible amount of energy and attitude. They won everyone in the crowd over. That gig was probably one of the highlights of this year, along with Shakori and the Cave.

Speaking of the Cave, we played there twice. One of those times was with Joe Bell and the Stinging Blades, a great band that I also play with fairly regularly. I was kept busy that night, but all of the music both bands played that night was dynamite. We love playing at the Cave, and are thankful for the opportunity.

Speaking of being thankful for opportunities, we also played at the Eno Festival, which was a blast. Neal was on vacation, so we recruited young bass legend Edwin John Leskin before his venture into college. (he has his own band, Sueprvision, who are incredible.)  We have some absolute stunning photos by a man named James Hill, which you can see here: http://www.jmhphoto.com/gallery/8933184_Z2Pcq#593130593_ijeCr

We have been having good times and kicking out the jams, but I digress. We have two upcoming shows currently booked.
    1) We are playing The Cave for a third time, this time with Cole Park, this Sunday (January 10). We hit the stage at 7:00. The cover charge is $5. This is the last show Cole Park is playing with their lead guitar player, Gabe Smiley, so make sure you stick around for them to watch history in the making.

    2) We have a gig at Papa Mojo's Roadhouse, a great new orleans flavored (no pun intended) restaurant and music venue. It's a great place, with very friendly staff. We're bringing the jams to the Roadhouse February 27, with a TBA cover charge. We will work hard to keep you dancing and having a good time. It will be a party, so come on out!

  • School is in session

    Current mood:busy

Alrighty lads and lassies. School's just about back in session, and that means get ready, because Old 86 is going to be teaching some lessons on How To Rock the Place! Every one should come down to Shakori Hills for an end-of-summer fundraiser on August 29'th to see a whole day of music Including The Never, Baron Von Rumblebuss, and Old 86 at 6:00. Then come to the Cave on September 18'th to see Old 86 give the Cave a good shakedown alongside Joe Bell and the Stinging Blades! And keep checking the schedule for appearances at the Cat's Cradle, the Broad Street Cafe, and maybe, if we're very, very lucky, Austin Texas' South By South West!
  • What a month.

    Current mood:refreshed

Wow, all of us in Old 86 have had the most active, high-profile gigging month of our lives.

It started off at Shakori Hills, where we played arguably our best show to date, with Mark Simonsen from the Old Ceremony playing vibraphones on a few songs. The audience kept growing and growing throughout the performance, and we ended with a full crowd.

The very next weekend, we played at the Cave. The main man behind the cave, Mouse, was an incredibly nice and gracious man. We played a 2 hour set that was, again, arguably our best show to date. Mouse really dug us, and rumor has it we might play a double bill with the acclaimed, the famed, Joe Bell and the Stinging Blades. Seriously, if you have never seen the Stinging Blades, you need to.

The Stinging Blades often play at a place called Papa Mojo's Roadhouse, which is one of the hippest places in town. The owner and chef, Mel Melton, has a band, Mel Melton & The Wicked Mojos. We opened for them the weekend after the Cave, on the same bill that included Cyril Lance. The gig was outdoors at 12:00 on a Saturday, and really opened my eyes to how the terrain affects your music. The outdoor gig was much more laid back and spacious than when we played at the Cave, which was a fireball of energy.

With these three gigs we have massively upgraded our resume, become a tighter group, and we're ready to work on some new songs to incorporate into the live shows. Stay tuned, and thank you for enjoying the music.

PS: I have a shameless plug to make. I made a little music myspace over at http://www.myspace.com/joefunkmusic, which, at the time of writing, has 6 original songs on it including a new Old 86 tune called Something Provocative. Check it out.

  • What's Next

    Current mood:content

Well everybody, we've almost finalized our Shakori Hills appearance, which I am quite excited about. In addition to the festival, we're playing a gig on March 15th to benefit the CROP walk. More information on that to come.

Along with these confirmed schedulings, we're working on doing an official CD-release party someplace, but it's looking doubtful. Regardless of whether a release party is in the cards, we'll be trying to play at yer local Cat's Cradle club soon, and we have a gig at The Cave in the works.

    Most exciting.

On the subject of new material, we have 11 songs that were not recorded on Keep It Goin', although some of them we've played live quite a bit. Among the songs you have probably not heard us play live are a fast-paced A-minor kinda thing that is written half in (very poor) Spanish, a Fusion piece, written by our very own Joe Macphail and entitled "Something Provocative", and a "Bob Dylan plays the Old Ceremony" kinda piece in 3/4, written by myself and a certain ~Reut. There is also a country song in the works, although it's live performance at any of our upcoming shows is doubtful.

New songs that you may have heard include 3 Funk pieces, a Psychedelic-Blues piece that once appeared on this very website as a demo, a waltz in D minor with a haunting organ/violin line, a fast paced MC5 meets The Rolling Stones garage-rock tune, and a piano-driven ballad sung by our own Mie Hirschfield.

Lots for you to look forward to.

    Good night, and good luck,

    Daniel
