  • Bio

Scorch Trio with Mars Williams Mars Williams: saxophones Raoul Björkenheim: guitar and mandolin Ingebrigt Håker Flaten: fender bass, electronics Frank Rosaly: drums The original Scorch Trio came about as the result of Raoul Björkenheim and Ingebrigt Flaten meeting at the Jyväskylä Summer Jazz Festival. Flaten travelled to Finland in 2000 with his partner from Elements, the drummer Paal Nilssen-Love, for several concerts and a recording for the finnish national radio YLE with Björkenheim. That soon led to other gigs in Scandinavia, and eventually the trio recorded three albums for the Norwegian label Rune Grammofon: Scorch Trio (2002), Luggumt (2004) and Brolt (2006). During those years the trio played many European festivals, as well as club dates in the US, Canada and Japan. They gained a reputation for delivering a fiercely improvised power jazz, their music often being compared to that of Hendrix's Band of Gypsies, Blood Ulmer and Ornette Coleman. In 2008 Paal left the trio, and Frank Rosaly, a member of Flaten's quintet, jumped on board to record their new album for Rune at Bill Laswell's Orange Sound Studio in 2009. Titled Melaza, it was released on October 25th 2010, ushering in a new chapter in the Scorch Trio story. In May 2011 the trio was joined by the saxophonist Mars Williams, from Chicago. Williams is a veteran musician, orchestrator and arranger who has energized many groups and projects with his fiery tenor sax playing, among them the Peter Brötzmann Tentet, the Vandermark 5, Mark Freeland's Electroman, Liquid Soul, Hal Russell's NRG Ensemble, Witches & Devils, Slam, and XmarsX. Recently he has been performing as a regular member of the gold-album-selling Psychedelic Furs. Echoes of Eric Dolphy, John Coltrane, Albert Ayler and Charlie Parker can be heard in his brilliant playing. Björkenheim calls his own guitar playing style "psyche-trance-ic-heavy-metal-ethno-free", as it draws much of it's inspiration from the deep well of world music. After playing for several years in Edward Vesala's "Sound & Fury", he started his own band Krakatau. Two cds on ECM with that group brought him international recognition, and led to collaborations with Paul Schutze, Bill Laswell, Toshinori Kondo and Nicky Skopelitis. His current projects include the rock trio Blixt, with Bill Laswell and Morgan Ågren, his duo with Lukas Ligeti, a trio with Hamid Drake and William Parker, and his own quartet. Flaten represents a special era in the Norwegian bass tradition. Inspired by Jimmy Garrison, Richard Davis and William Parker, as well as European bassists Barry Guy, Dave Holland and Peter Kowald, he provides an historical continuity of the instrument's tradition in improvisation. Undoubtedly one of the busiest bassists on the scene today, his regular bands include Atomic, the Thing, the IHF quintet, the Electrics and Freefall. He has performed and recorded with Tony Malaby, Evan Parker, Joe McPhee and a multitude of other great musicians. Rosaly lives in Chicago, where he has been involved in the improvised and experimental music community for 10 years, navigating a fine line between vibrant improvised, experimental, rock and jazz music. Among the groups he's involved with are Matana Robert's Chicago Project, Rob Mazurek's Mandarin Movie, The Rempis Percussion Quartet, Jeff Parker/Nels Cline Quartet, Josh Abrams Remindring, Fred Lonberg-Holm's Valentine Trio, Keefe Jackson's Fast Citizens & Project Project, The Josh Berman Quartet, The Jeb Bishop Trio, Jason Adasievicz's Rolldown, Jorrit Dijkstra's Flatlands Collective, Chicago Lucern Exchange, Hearts and Minds, Slow Cycle, Outskirts and the Daniel Levin Trio.
