This is something I've been writing -- "...Within four pews sat nearly every living relative on my mother’s side. They were lost in shock and pain. Even men silently wept. Tears pooled in premature wrinkles. Hands, many stained by motor oil, clenched damp bits of Kleenex. I contrasted this image against our family photos. When they were young, my mother and her siblings were ready for the raw world around them. They flirted and drank and brawled. They scrounged pennies so they could buy baby blue eye-shadow and mag tires. They thought that by living large, they would somehow make it big. Many of them swore to never struggle for a tract house like their parents or running water like their grandparents. But they fought the wrong fights. At some point, much to late, it must have dawned on them that prosperity wasn’t waiting at the bottom of a bottle nor could it be caught racing back country roads..."
