Tadeusz Boy-Żeleński (Tadeusz Kamil Marcjan Żeleński) [1874 – 1941] was a Polish gynecologist, writer, poet, critic—above all, translator of over 100 French literary classics into Polish.
A notable personality in the Young Poland movement, Boy was the enfant terrible of the Polish literary scene in the first half of the 20th century.

After Nazi Germany broke the Nazi-Soviet Alliance and attacked the USSR and the Soviet-held Polish Kresy, Boy remained in Lwów. The city was captured on the night of July 4, 1941, and he was arrested and taken to the Wulka hills, where he was murdered together with 45 other Polish professors, artists and intelligentsia in what became known as the massacre of Lviv professors.

Boy signing his books in "Wiadomości Literackie", Warsaw 1932:

LA FUITE DE LA LUNE

To outer senses there is peace,
A dreamy peace on either hand,
Deep silence in the shadowy land,
Deep silence where the shadows cease.

Save for a cry that echoes shrill
From some lone bird disconsolate;
A corncrake calling to its mate;
The answer from the misty hill.

And suddenly the moon withdraws
Her sickle from the lightening skies,
And to her sombre cavern flies,
Wrapped in a veil of yellow gauze.

- Oscar Wilde

'La Fuite de la Lune' was originally published in the Irish Monthly,
February, 1877, as part III of Lotus Leaves.

Jul 15 2009 9:00 AM

When I got rid of grieving
And the glory I was seeking,
Which I had no business doing,

I was carried by dragons
Over countries, bays, and mountains,
By fate, or by what happens.

Oh yes, I wanted to be me.
I toasted mirrors weepily
And learned my own stupidity.

From nails, mucous membrane,
Lungs, liver, bowels, and spleen
Whose house is made? Mine.

So what else is new?
I am not my own friend.
Time cuts me in two.

Monuments covered with snow,
Accept my gift. I wandered;
And where, I don't know.

“City Without a Name” by Czeslaw Miłosz from The Collected Poems: 1931-1987.

Jerzy Petersburski [1895 – 1979] - was a Polish pianist and composer of popular music, renowned mostly for his Tangos, some of which (such as To ostatnia niedziela, Już nigdy and Tango Milonga) were milestones in popularization of the musical genre in Poland and are still widely known today, more than half a century after their creation.

Antoni Cierplikowski "Antoine" [1884-1976] - a famous Polish hairdesser of international repute. He was the first who created the short hair-styles for women called "garcone" (the first haircut was for an actress Eve Lavalliere in 1909). Among his clients were the most rich and famous people, actors of those time in USA, Britain and France: Sarah Bernhardt, Josephine Baker, Édith Piaf, Brigitte Bardot... etc. He also designed styles for MGM. Was a friend of Xawery Dunikowski and Jean Cocteau...
