Subject: Chris Parker wrote this review for the Independent Weekly Every town has to have their nearly-do-wells, the envy of their ne’er-do-well neighbors, who somehow still self-destruct short of the finish line. While Snatches of Pink and Clarissa both went to the summit, enjoying a major label tenure and a bid for radio play, they never quite sparked popular imagination, despite several fine, critically well-regarded albums. This DVD recounts their story through the remembrances of the principals and industry locals, interspersed with their music videos, and live performances. It’s a great time-capsule. But beyond that it’s a reminder of an act that due in part to their iconoclastic nature got lost in the ‘80s and ‘90s indie rock cacophony. At one point original frontman, Andy McMillan says, “when the record buying public says they prefer Superchunk to Snatches of Pink – you can’t tell rock’n’roll what to do. We are who we are, and we’re going to do what we do.” This is the crux of Snatches/Clarissa’s situation – they never seemed to provide people quite what they expected, the ideal balance of their reckless live energy and the more textured sound of their studio albums in later years. This maverick streak continues to drive the second incarnation of Snatches, which receives its share of air time as well. The DVD’s bonus disc features a handful of Snatches music videos, interview outtakes, as well as a number of live performances. Most are from a performances in the last year at the 506 (good quality video) and their record release this April at the Reservoir (poor video, but sounds great with John Howie on drums). Towards the end of the doc, the interviewer asks if things have changed musically speaking for Rank. Hardly at all, he suggests, “I’m still searching for the same fucking things.” For rock diehards, the exploration never ends.
The film is available on Amazon and directly from Trickle Down Productions via the film's Myspace page.
Hello everyone. Here’s where we’re at with the Snatches of Pink film “Now it’s a Rock and Roll Show”. I was hoping to have it finished in time for the Love is Dead CD release party but unfortunately the film is not quite ready yet. The good news is that has allowed me to continue filming. We filmed a rehearsal at Go! Studios last week-they FUCKING rocked the roof off the place (do yourself a big favor and come see the band at either of their CD release shows-the set list includes a couple of great/obscure covers-as you would expect from the boys-maybe a couple of STAG tracks and tons from Love is Dead). The delay also means the Reservoir show will also be filmed.
Other good news is I’m considering making it a 2 DVD package. The first DVD will trace the history of the band over the last 20+ years through interviews and performances and the second will contain full length performances shot over the last year, songs from Michael Rank’s archives and SOP music videos combined with interview outtakes, bloopers and other funny shit.
The film should be ready for release sometime mid summer 2007 and be available through the SOP website, Amazon and local record stores.
If anyone has pictures of the band and would like to send them to me to possibly be included in the film please get in touch with me through MySpace.
Is the cover of Love is Dead the best album cover you’ve seen is years or what. How cool would that look as a LP?
Here are a few clips from last week’s rehearsal.

Hello everyone-I hope you enjoyed the trailer of Now it’s a Rock & Roll show!!! The film is almost finished!!! Currently the film runs two hours and 20 minutes and I’m working to get it under two hours. The film tells the story of the early days of the band through the Clarissa period, in addition to how Snatches of Pink evolved into the current line up. Unfortunately I was not able to include full performances of all the songs used in the film. On the plus side I was able to use parts of over 20 songs (with 5 full performances) that cover every era of the band. Some of the chapter titles include “Angry Young Men”, “Why in Snatches”, “The Dive”, “Rebels Send in the Clowns”, “The Whole Package” and “Music Fans”. Look for a release on DVD at the end of April and for some NEW video clips on YouTube soon.
Snatches of Pink film update: The film is entering Post Production. Over 16 hours of interviews have been completed. In addition to the current members of the band, original members Andy McMillan and Sara Romweber have been interviewed along with Producer John Plymale and former Mammoth executives Steve Balcom and Lane Wurster. Ten hours of live performances have been filmed that include Snatches shows from this past fall, rehearsals, and Michael playing songs acoustically from the new album Love is Dead. And then there’s 12 hours of footage from Michael’s archives that include MTV News clips, music videos and live footage from the early days. Look for a trailer appearing in a few weeks.
