Nealiios	Nov 12 2007 6:04 PM You've already heard the news from the WGA. When a studio sells a DVD for $19, the writers get 4 cents. If it gets aired on the Internet, they get zero. Now I have a truly tragic figure for you. For every dollar that is earned off the dozens of computer gaming titles I have helped to create, I get exactly zero dollars and zero cents. There's a "Dungeon Siege" movie coming out based on the characters I created for the game. How much do I get for that? Nothing. When I did the storyline for Betrayal at Krondor and it was novelized by Raymond Feist, how much of a residual did I get from sales of that bestselling novel? Nothing. For over two decades now, game content developers (that's not just writers but the artists, programmers, and other folks) have slaved away on products with nothing but an immediate paycheck, despite the fact that our creative duties are no less rigorous than those of our brothers and sisters in film, television, comic books and other entertainment media. While the corporations we work for get filthy rich, we're still worrying about the next gig. Game content developers deserve residuals, and they deserve them now. We have even more reason to strike than those in the WGA, but there is no guild to protect us. If you love games that have quality writing in them, if you give a damn about content, write to the publishers of your favorite games and demand that the content teams be given residuals for all their hard work. It's only fair. It's the right thing to do.
