  • Writers @ Edit Red

'City Smells' is a new literary project set up by the Edit Red Writing Community.

We are running three writing competitions, Flash Fiction, Creative Non-Fiction and Poetry, all with the theme 'City Smells. The winners of each of these competitions will win $100. But more than this, we will take the best work from each competition and compile a paperback 'City Smells' anthology. The writers who make it into the 'City Smells' anthology will each receive free copies of the book and be paid a royalty in book sales.

To submit to these competition and stand a chance of being published in the 'City Smells' book you must be a member of Edit Red, as the submission process is automated. Joining Edit Red and entering these competitions is 100% free. If you make it into the book, we will pay royalties based on book sales.

Edit Red has existed for many years and was created and is still managed today by non-fiction author Alan Emmins, creative writing teacher Chris Lee Ramsden and literary reviewer Sean Merrigan.

If you are not already a member, we hope you will join and take part in this great literary event. Sign up here for free!

    Regards
    Alan, Sean and Chris

    dutiful exhumation

for the artist's spire by candlelight
a utensil containing lead or ink
    gentle to the proper word
ray johnson was a man of straw.
    lace is lovelorn cursive
    although set to braille
and paced with thoughts of achilles.
I who wander the claims of shadow
am shamed against the molten tier...
    blessed pages to buoyant childhood
    mass of the unlettered embryo,
    woebegone as devils mocking words
    orange as fire and valueless.
    trace light with little fingers,
the wooded child seeking its own
smiles into or athwart the sun
    as it may solely understand
    a shroud of light.
    for the artist's spire
    is danger in bottles
in dopamine bags and silly expressions,
a mantle on which he places calm
and the trophies of his sadness.
logs in towers and stillborn jewels
although I have yet to unseal my eyes
    we conversed of vision
    and lesser family
all within an hour of wine.
the sickly fraud of working hours
    shackles the soul from breathing;
sat to the simian bonfire with grimace
    and meal
    siphoned from the immediate breast.
    so in a word
    distending from time
a wet bell sounds for delivery,
    drugged with repetition
    and amused in silence
    the flicker of perspiration ordains
    cigarette and sleep.
