About me:
The 95th (Rifle) Regiment of Foot are a re-enactment society based in the UK. We re-enact the lives of soldiers and camp followers during the Napoleonic Wars, from dramatic battles to period encampments.
Formed in 1800 as The Experimental Corp of Riflemen the 95th were to fight in many a battle and build up such a reputation as they would be known as the elite of the British army.
We re-enact from 1800 to 1816, covering the whole of the Peninsular War right up to the most decisive battle of all time which was to change the course of history forever, Waterloo.
On this page you will find the diary of one of our new recruits in his first season as a rifleman, giving an insite to what its like to be part of one of the best group of re-enactors around and part of one of Britains greatest regiments.
History of the 95th
It was decided to form an experimental Corps of Riflemen under General
Coot-Manningham, whos role it would be to act as skirmishers against the French armies. Clad in dark green uniforms, as opposed to the bright red coats of the British Line Infantry regiments, they were to make best use of natural cover from which to harass the enemy with accurately aimed shots. Their marksmanship was paramount when it came to dispensing with French gun crews, officers and drummers, and so they were armed with the first Rifle ever issued to British troops, the Baker Rifle.
Named after Ezekial Baker, its manufacturer, this rifle with its grooved barrel was capable of accuracy up to and sometimes exceeding 300 yards, as opposed to the issue Brown Bess musket which had an effective range of only 50 yards.
One accent of the regiment was to have the rifleman working in open order and be able to think for themselves, a method completely unheard of prior to its formation. Most recruits were selected from the cream of other line regiments and most could read and write, a factor which led to so many keeping diaries and so assisting our modern-day appreciation of life at the time.
The experimental corps entered the roll as the 95th regiment of foot, remaining so until 1816, when they were taken out of the line to become the Rifle Brigade. During the 16 year period in between, they fought in all campaigns during the Napoleonic wars, seeing sea-service at the battle of Copenhagen, were engaged in most major battles during the peninsular wars in Spain, forming the rearguard for the British armies retreat to Corunna, were sent as an expeditionary force to America and of course, held their positions against tremendous odds at the battle of Waterloo in June 1815.
Their espirit de corps was bolstered by being taught instead of flogged, holding regular shooting and sporting competitions and by being rewarded for each achievement. Officers would regularly dine with their men and in so doing would become familiar with each man in their respective companies, again a discipline unheard of at the time. The Rifle Brigade, along with many of its traditions, exists today as the Royal Green Jackets, who still often remain first in the field and the last out.
