  • Bio

Hoolie play an exciting mixture of original material and their own interpretations of traditional Irish tunes. Their set also includes songs from both sides of the Atlantic. .. Hoolie have been entertaining people in and around London since the early 90s. They were first heard in the capital's thriving Irish pub circuit in venues such as The Swan at Stockwell, The Fiddlers Elbow and Biddy Mulligans as well as in live performances transmitted on BBC Radio. The spirit of the band has always been, and remains grounded in Traditional Irish Music but there are also influences from other traditions including Scottish and American Bluegrass which are evident in their arrangements and original compositions. Although they still perform in pubs that have maintained a program of live music they now appear more often in larger venues, performing regularly in The National Theatre, The Royal Festival Hall and Hammersmith Irish Centre. They have, however, remained true to the roots of the music and hold weekly acoustic sessions in the Narrow Boat pub (St Peter's Street London N1) and The Porterhouse (Maiden Lane) where anyone who can hold down a tune or belt out a song is welcome to join in with the band. Hoolie also perform to school groups and run short workshops introducing children to the tradition of Irish music, instruments and dance. Dave is an experienced SEN teacher based in NW London and has delivered workshops to schools providing children with the opportunity to record their own CD's of self penned plays/poems or choral performances. Alice is a professional dance amd choroegrapher and her dancing has become a feature of the bands live performances. There have been a few line up changes since the band's original incarnation. The current members are Dave Thorpe guitar/bouzouki/cittern/mandolin/banjo/dobro/vocals Teresa Maguire fiddle/mandolin/vocals Alice Cade flute/pipes/whistles/dancing Andrea Patmore concertina Steve Taylor: drums/percussion The band also appear where appropriate with callers for ceilis or barn dances Hoolie's first album together (titled 'hoolie') was realeased in Aug 2006. They also feature, along with some well known names from the world of Irish music including Brendan Power and Colette O'Leary, on Dave's first solo album 'Play Me A Blue Song' (released September 2004). Dave's second album 'Don't Shake My Tree' is available through his website or iTunes. ....
