Taraka is a Krishna from the Gainseville (FL) punk scene, totally mystico-spiritual, legit. If Maya Deren had a band and wore purplish leggings, a gold hockey helmet on her bike...
CHRIS CORSANO (US - Ultra Eczema | Family Vineyard | Ecstatic Yod)
"Chris Corsano is seriously one of the most exciting drummers on the planet." -Adam Richards, indieworkshop.com
Corsano is a multi-faceted drummer; a list of his collaborations attests to that fact. He's recorded and gigged with, among others, Paul Flaherty, Michael Flower, Björk, Jim O'Rourke, Thurston Moore, Evan Parker, Nels Cline, Jessica Rylan, Jandek, Six Organs of Admittance, Sunburned Hand Of Man, Okkyung Lee, MV&EE, Keiji Haino, Vampire Belt, Joe McPhee, Christina Carter and Heather Leigh Murray. First spellbound by free improvised music in the mid '90s through witnessing performances by TEST, William Parker, Cecil Taylor and others, Corsano began a long-standing high-energy partnership with Paul Flaherty in 1998. Moving from western Massachusetts, USA to Manchester, England in 2005 and then Edinburgh, Scotland a year later, Corsano focused on developing an expanded solo percussion music of his own, incorporating sax reeds, violin strings and bows, pot lids, adhesive tape and other household devices into his drumkit. In February 2006 he released his first solo recording, The Young Cricketer, and toured the UK opening for Jack Rose. In 2007 and '08 he was the drummer on Björk's Volta world tour. With a move back to Massachusetts, 2009 heralds a return to his own projects, most notably his duo with Michael Flower and solo work, now revamped to include synthesizers and contact mics in addition to his drum kit and home-made acoustic instruments.
Press Quotes:
"Corsano, despite being arguably the most riotosly energetic and creative drummer in contemporary free jazz, does far more than merely bash his kit into submission. Playing loud does not mean abandoning subtlety, and Corsano's sudden shifts of texture and dynamics are a wonder to behold." - Dan Warburton, The Wire (April 2006)
"Corsano is one of the best drummers of his generation" - Byron Coley, Arthur Magazine (Sept. 2002)
"...Chris Corsano, a young free player who already looks like becoming the most significant and syntactically advanced percussionist to come out of the free rock/jazz nexus. His playing is so exuberant and explosively alive that it transcends any kind of responsive playing, inhabiting instead a sublime zone where pure energy spontaneously gives birth to form." - David Keenan, Scottish Sunday Herald (May 18, 2003)
"Corsano updates the multi-directional freedom of Rashied Ali and deftly shudders about the drums with jaw-dropping skillfulness, coaxing a staggering array of rhythms and sounds from his traps. Laced through it all is an undeniable display of raw emotion laid out like a sacrificial lamb, offered to the gods to save us all" - Chris Scofield, Fake Jazz
CHRISTINE SEHNAOUI (FR - Al Maslakh | Olof Bright)
Born in 1978 and living in France, Christine is from lebanese origins. It is with the discovering of improvised music in 1997 that Christine Sehnaoui decided to start her own autodidact study of sound experimentation on the alto saxophone. She creates a personal language on how to make electronic music on an acoustic instrument. Far away from narrative or dramatic music, her music tries to deal with the relation between listening and the concept of perception, time and space. With deep sensitivity, she develops extended techniques and complex patterns, exploring the microtonal aspects of the saxophone or the high-pitched tone. She produces nifty tonguing tricks, unpitched breaths, spittle-flecked growls, biting, slicing notes or breathy echoey sounds from the bell of her horn.
Her main musical partners include Sharif Sehnaoui, Michel Waisvisz, Stéphane Rives, Mazen Kerbaj, Michael Zerang, Mathias Forge, Olivier Toulemonde, Pascal Battus, Basile Ferriot and many others. For the past few years, she has been working with dancers ( Buto and contemporary dance) and she also undertakes an ungoing research on musical pedagogy (concerts for children, intervention in schools). Besides, since 2001, she contibutes to develop impovisation in her country of origins, Lebanon, where she co-organizes the annual festival of improvised music in Lebanon, called « Irtijal ».
ALEXANDRE BELLENGER (FR - ARR | Beta-lactam Ring Records)
Born in Philadelphia on Spruce Street. Went to school. Left school. Moved to New York 2002. Played in bands. Worked in a deli. Worked as a gardener. Worked selling shirts. Worked selling tea. Left work. Left New York 2007. Rented a cabin, Three weeks. Catskill mountains. Recorded DIA. Moved to Beijing, China. Worked for a Chinese newspaper. Spent money to travel in the western countryside. Working on a second record.
A lot of crazy shit can happen to a man when he goes solitary in a ramshackle Catskill Mountain home for an extended stretch of time-especially for a city kind of guy. But if Amen Dunes’s 12 tracker 'DIA' is one possible outcome of the guy alone-in-a-cabin- story, then a little tape saturated brain frying is something we should all live comfortably with because this is a batch of seriously raw & inspired loner psych grit that owes a debt to the diy soundz of the George Brigman s of the world. That was 2006. These days the lone wolf behind Amen Dunes -Damon McMahon calls a small two room apartment overlooking the Temple of Earth in North-Central Beijing home, where he watches old men fly kites and sing opera every morning. Who knows what’ll come out of that.
Press quotes:
“Totally inspirational, mind blowing, rocking, catchy, darkly mysterious... Easily one of our favorite records of the year so far!!” (Aquarius Records)
"McMahon could chase Bon Iver off his lawn for stealing roses and everyone will be scared to go near Jandek’s house because there might be ghosts in there.” (The Fader)
"The gritty production of this album combined with such raw otherworldly sounds really makes Amen Dunes’ debut sounds more like a lost basement tape of Syd Barrett jamming with Amon Duul I (I assume the “band” name is an offbeat reference to that seminal German group) than anything contemporary I can really think of (...) Amen Dunes, to me, has a sense of timelessness that will really set this album apart from its peers. These songs not only reveal a glimmering reverb-drenched universe for all to enjoy, but also promise to captivate the listener with a haunting yet wondrous landscape of sound.” (Other Music)
"One of the most remarkable things to come from the D.I.Y. world in quite some time. This (LP) should be snapped up by any fan of the emotionally honest and musically weird school of songwriting and recording. Thanks to the Locust label for having the intelligence and faith to release this project.” (All Music Guide)
PRINCE RAMA OF AYODHYA (US - Cosmos Records)
**The Advent of Sonic Utopia**
Spawned from the vernal heat of the Florida swamps amidst swirling patterns of pine orchards and pre-Columbian artifacts, Prince Rama of Ayodhya was whispered into the ears of Taraka Larson, Nimai Larson, and Michael Collins in the summer of 2007 by the clanging of prayer bells and goat-skin drums. They left the Hare Krishna farm where they were staying and formed a creative nucleus in Boston, MA where they gained a cult following in the underground art and psychedelic folk and noise circles who were mesmerized by their captivating blend of campfire surrealism and transcendental anthems of every cosmic order. Taraka studied experimental film in art school, and her songwriting reflects an almost cinematic quality, taking listeners on labyrinthine sonic safaris with sparkling lyrical imagery intensified by Nimai's tribal drumming and elevated to the astral plane by Michael's sci-fi synth lines; the result is a sonic experience that takes the listener through celestial residue and archaeological constellations of a timeless civilization pining for self realization, while conjuring lingering anthemic melodies that haunt the fringes of the collective psyche. At times, one can hear echoes of eclectic influences stretching from weird folk and hallucinatory operas set to thunder drums to a plethora of ethnographic recordings of Native American and Southeast Asian rituals; yet, the culminating holistic sound is one that is strikingly unique. In a short time, the trio was picked up by the British-based psychedelic label, Cosmos Recordings, through a mutual love of the Skygreen Leopards. After sending them a handmade CD-R with a few dozen tracks recorded in forests and candle-lit bedrooms, Cosmos released a collection of these lo-fi recordings as "Threshold Dances" in August 2008 and flew them out to England to tour, play a radio session for the BBC, participate in the Stockton International Fringe Festival and Greenman Festival and record a second album to be released late Fall 2009.
In their young lifespan, Prince Rama has toured the US and UK, traveling with Teeth Mountain and sharing stages with Caribou, Wooden Shjips, Magik Markers, Psychic Ills, Indian Jewelry, Pocahaunted, Kurt Vile, Night Jewel, and playing festivals with Pentangle, Spiritualized, Iron and Wine, Clinic, Black Mountain and many others. Their engaging and often unpredictable live shows reflect their eclectic pool of mysticism; amidst collective chants, werewolf summonings, and Sanskrit invocations, they have been known to distribute hand drums, conch shells, bells, gongs, and other various percussion to members of the audience to create the ultimate communal ritual experience.
North American Blues Faith, North African Grooves, South European Atitude, South American Taste, Jazz Love of Music, Grunge Way to Express It, 60's warmth & XXI century Freshness.
Born In France, live for 6 years in belgium. Country of pure deliverance. For many years Mim has recorded many cd-r's, all self-released, that he used to distribute directly, from hand to hand, to people in every corners where the vibe souded cool. Totally feed by guitar legends as Bukka White, John Fahey, Charlie Tweddle , Loren Connors and Harry Partch he created his own guitar language, mix of fast lightning scratching style and multicolored melodic moods. His love for Pop music as Van Dyke Parks, The Beatles, The Fugs, Joe Meek and Kahimi Karie pushed him to record and produce through crazy architectural forms his own music and many belgium bands. He use to collaborate with él-g on many records as producer and guitar man and he shared stage with people like Mv & Ee, Duncan Pinhas and of course his last band project, X-Factors ( No link with Iron Maiden ). He plans now to tour solo in northern Europe for the end of the year, dates are coming soon! A new fresh melted pop album should be released on a label around november.

The "Err on the Good Side" 12" compilation curated by ali_fib is out now on the new born french-swiss label three:four records. The artwork is by zeloot.
A1 Ilitch - Chambre 1
A2 Amen Dunes - Diane (extended)
A3 Steve Gunn - Chazy Landing
A4 Ben Nash - Untitled
A5 Duane Pitre - Study for "The Carpenter"
B1 Hellvete - Osschaarts Kiste
B2 Mike Wexler - Nomadic
B3 Sir Richard Bishop - Moorish Tiles
B4 Liberez - Untitled
B5 él-g, sus et jakob - Förgiftad gåva
"Many compilation records project a single mood, whether of melancholy, joy, relaxation, aggression, romance. . . but Err on the Good Side will put you in a state of receptivity. Sounds shift across this disc like the light on a bright but cloudy day. You might think you see the outline of minimalism in the honky tonk piano by Ilitch; of techno in the pulses of an electronic tone generated by Duane Pitre; or of straightforward virtuosity in the guitar playing by Sir Richard Bishop. But then the shapes dissolve, and you find that above all, each track has left you open to whatever the next presents. There is a logic here -- it's the logic of superb concert programmers like ali_fib, based in Paris, who are directed by a passion for sound outside questions of genre or style, and who always make it worth the price of admission." - Damon Krukowski
- Joseph Ghosn
