ROCK the TOYBOX IX Sat. December 20th 2008
A Toys For Tots benefit in conjunction with The US Marine Corps!!
Rock The ToyBox IX
A Toys For Tots Benefit in Conjunction with the U.S. Marines Rocked at Paladino’s
Review & Photos by Debra Stocker
And rock they did at the OFFICIAL Rock the Toy Box IX, a benefit for Toys For Tots, which was a HUGE success thanks to all of YOU and your generosity!
This annual event produced by GreenStock Productions (Debra Stocker & John Green) is usually held earlier in the month, but holding it later this year didn’t stop the fans! Some drove in from OVER 100 miles (one way!) to come out and “Rock the ToyBox” with us all of us this year!
This event started over nine years ago and seems to have taken on a following all its own – and is still going strong. Producing this event in conjunction with the U.S. Marines means so much for so many lil’ boys and girls EVERY year, and I truly want to THANK all who attended, including our sponsors, for participating in Rock the ToyBox’s continuous success. To all the groups: For your time, effort and support that I so appreciate more than words can say, thank you!
Rock The ToyBox, now in its NINTH year, has become a HUGE event, growing bigger and bigger every year! Just ask the fans of Trailer Park Mafia who traveled all the way in from Lake Hughes, CA, and beyond to be here tonight! “It’s for a GREAT cause, and I wouldn’t miss it,” said EVERYBODY at this year’s event! Many of L.A.'s groups/artists who had joined us on previous shows came back to show their support and donate their toys. Collecting “Toys For Tots” through music is such a rewarding feeling, and to know you helped put a smile on a child's face come Christmas morning is priceless!
Once again, this year’s event was made possible with the help of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Center in Pasadena. Thank you to all the U.S. Marines who came down to Paladino’s and helped support our event. Your help at the door to greet our guests as they came in with all the toys was awesome – not to mention it’s always a pleasure to have Marines in the house!
Rock the ToyBox IX was hosted this year by Paladino’s, located at 6101 Reseda Blvd. in Tarzana. It was great to be back, and it was such a pleasure working with all the staff at Paladino’s who did a great job and made us feel welcome. A special thanks to our soundman, John Pepperidge: What a terrific job! He kept our event running smoothly, on time, and OMG the sound was incredible! A special thanks to Paladino’s owner Oscar and manager Sarah for inviting us back this year!
Other proud sponsors of this year’s event included FERNANDEZ GUITARS, COFFIN CASE, FLASHROCK, TROWER OF POWER, THE CAUZE, SOUND STREET STUDIOS, MANRIQUE PHOTOS, and of course ALL ACCESS MAGAZINE.
Admission was only $10.00 or 1 new unwrapped toy valued at $10.00 or more. Once inside, 5 groups performed from 8:00 PM until 2 AM, including a special jam with FULL HOUSE following our spectacular event.
This year’s emcee was the very multitalented STU SIMONE, who is no stranger to the stage. Everyone loves Stu, and many of you remember him from his performances with ROBIN MCAULEY (MSG, SURVIVOR), HEAVEN AND EARTH, ’80s hair band tribute HAIR GUITAR, ESCAPE a tribute to Journey, BAD MEDICINE, LA GRANGE, INFINITY, SOUTHERN VOODOO and EVOLUTION. Perhaps you have heard him on QUIET RIOT’S “Cum On Feel the Noize” album or seen him on tour 1999-2000 with POISON! Maybe, if you haven’t been too busy this holiday season, you may have seen him in the new blockbuster movie “Four Christmases” in which Stu plays Dwight Yoakum’s church band leader! Find out more at www.keytarmusic.com, myspace.com/stusimone, and youtube.com/stusimone.
I know you have to have caught at least one of Stu’s many projects, because Stu also co-hosted the 2007 All Access Magazine Music Awards Show. It was an honor to have him back with us to Rock The ToyBox! He kept our show going with plenty of tales of yesteryear, jokes, giveaways and $1.00 drawings that included a Fernandez guitar giveaway, a guitar case and drum bag by Coffin Case, CDs, T-shirts, 3 miniature guitars, and a photo season from Manrique Photos.
Tons of fun included the crowning of Kathy, aka Kit~Kat or Miss November, as our new Miss All Access Magazine 2008! Kathy is 24 years old, a Latin girl from Orange County who works full time and is a part-time student. She is very busy! She loves entertainment so you’ll be seeing more of Kathy this year coming, and keep those votes rolling in.
John Green (CEO of GreenStock Productions) got our night rolling and hung out all night mingling with our guests. Thanks, Mr. Green, for your continuous effort and support for all of the events sponsored by All Access Magazine!
A special thanks to SOUND STREET STUDIOS - Reseda and The CAUZE for their help with our backline. Could this night get any better?
I'm so glad you asked; first up was Trailer Park Mafia, bringing us the best in ’70s, ’80s and ’90s metal covers. Their fans a very loyal group, driving over 100 miles one way to support this band! Once here they were glad they came and had so much fun dancing and drinking, it didn’t seem to matter it would be a long haul back home! Thank you, Billy, Mike, Nick, Rick, and for the BIG hug, PERCUSSION/DOWN TOWN MATT BROWN! C-you all again really soon! www.myspace.com/
thetrailerparkmafia.
Up next was an original classic-melodic rock band with a metal edge, The Cauze. Their passion for music is very clear, and had many lined up in front of the stage in total ahhhhhhh! Veterans of the music scene, The Cauze is now signed to Nightmare Records and was one of the very few bands asked back to this year’s Rocklahoma! It was an honor having them grace our stage here at Paladino’s to ROCK at Rock The ToyBox IX! Thanks, guys, for your help with our backline as well! www.thecauzeband.com
Next were the masters of metal themselves, JUST LIKE PRIEST, a tribute to Judas Priest! This group has been together since 2001 as Empyre (tribute to Queensryche). Performing to a capacity crowd, this band really needs no introduction. In fact, vocalist Frank Casciato is responsible for getting my butt moving on this year’s Toys For Tots show. I was running a little behind schedule this year with all the hustle and bustle life sometimes throws in our direction. I wasn’t to sure there would be time to put this event together. Thanks, Frank, for that little “kick in the pants” and the faith to know that everyone would work hard for such a great cause! www.myspace.com/
justlikepriest
“On with the show!” Next up, this band lives up to their motto of high energy rock with garnishes of hip hop and metal: The CHIMPZ! Their influences are rock, metal, punk, hip hop/R&B, metalicore, jazz/blues, funk fusion, and death metal. After a special request by Paladino’s that this band be on the bill, I quickly made the call. No monkeyin’ around here! The Chimpz have a unique sound that, if you haven’t heard by now, well, what are you waiting for? Get up and get down with The Chimpz. And if you missed them at Toys For Tots, you’ll be happy to know they’ll be back for an encore very soon! www.myspace.com/thechimpz
Next up was a special performance with FULL HOUSE. This band NEVER disappoints us and gives a whole new meaning to the word “troopers”! It was another last-minute call, and once again Full House to the rescue! It truly amazes me what a fellowship working with all these bands over the years has created. No snow, rain, holiday shopping or even a hard-to-find babysitter could keep them away! Thanks for the Christmas present, Shannon: Love the shot class! www.123drink.com
The marquee out front read CARBON 9…and yes, Stacey Quinealty/vocals and Darwin DeVitis/guitarist were in the house to support our event, but unfortunately they were unable to perform. But like The Chimpz, you’ll see them again really soon for a show you won’t want to miss!
From start to finish, the ninth annual Rock The ToyBox was a huge success! It was a night full of some of the best indie music in L.A., with plenty of prizes and giveaways, the crowning of Miss All Access Magazine 2008, and YOU – who made it out to Paladino’s to be a part of it all!
Thank you again to Sarah and all the staff at Paladino’s, and thanks again to all the artists/groups for giving up their time during a very busy holiday season! Paladino’s was packed with toys, Marines, fans, and friends, and it was great to see you all! Thanks again for supporting not only this show but ALL the events sponsored here by All Access Magazine!
This year’s OFFICIAL ROCK THE TOYBOX IX had to be the best one ever! Happy Holidays, everyone, and thanks for believing with us that, "Every Child Deserves A Little Christmas"! A BIG thanks to Naj and Rob for believing in Santa Claus and greeting our guests at the door. Thanks Ernie Manrique for ALL your help, and Darlene and Tony for supplying us that wonderful feast! Will and Lee, thanks for working security: AAM welcomes you aboard! And last but not least, special thanks to Stevie Lovelight of The Vagabonz, who brought THREE BAGS filled with toys from a Toys For Tots show his band did for us in Burbank at Mr. B’s a week prior! One thing’s for sure, come Christmas morning there will be tons of kids with BIG smiles on their faces!
And no Rock The ToyBox event would be complete without the spiritual presence of JEFF LENHART - XPELD! Thank you, John Green, for putting on the song “Got To Leave” by XPELD at the end of our show! It was a perfect ending to a perfect event! God bless you ALL for making this year’s Rock The ToyBox a huge success! No thrills, no frills, and no gimmicks this year, just a good time and a Very Merry Metal Christmas!
Merry Christmas and have a safe and happy new year. See you all next year!
