Except for the bright stage lights she is under, the theater is black. The stage is quiet, and the audience is watching and listening. As the music cues up, Allison Lowery feels tears welling as the familiar notes of “Calling All Angels” begin. At 22, Allison had lost her father a mere week before beginning her career as a professional performer in “Honky Tonk Angels.” From a place deep within, Allison summons the courage to begin singing. Her first note is followed by another and then another, and in a stream of melody and emotion, she and her two co-stars carry the audience away with the song.
The song, replete with double meanings, spoke powerfully to Allison. It was hard, night after night, to get through that song without crying. For her the song was a direct and powerful connection to her father, an embodiment for the grief and loss and love, and ultimately gratitude for him.
Starring in the Sanford, NC Temple Theater’s 2006 production of “Honky Tonk Angels,” was a seminal project for her. The play is about three Southern women who meet on a bus and form a country singing group. Allison Lowery had always enjoyed singing country music, and had grown up singing along with Dolly Parton and Reba McEntire in the backseat of her parents’ car. During the course of the show a strong personal and professional bond between the stars developed, and her bond to the music was strengthened as well. Allison’s love of country music was rekindled. It was during that production she realized she had to follow her heart, and focus her career solely on country music.
Allison is receiving the same praise for her debut album as she did on the Honky Tonk Angels performance. ‘We feel your emotions when you sing,’ people tell her. And the unspoken truth they don’t voice is that her voice lets them feel their own emotions as well.
Lowery brings that pure and unadulterated sense of emotion to each song on her latest collection. She co-wrote “Holding Your Hand” Track 4. It grapples with the loss of her father, and his legacy of love, strength and wisdom, and the time frame moves with her from childhood through adulthood. Track 1 /”Fallen Through The Cracks” is a sassy, swinging rebuff of a jilted lover on the mend. She croons over the inevitability of love at first sight on “Already Loved You” /Track 3. “I’ll Think of You”/Track 2 crackles with lost and remembered love. Allison’s cover of “At Last” brings a country sensibility all her own to the Etta James’ classic. With only a hint of a twang and a bounce, she lets listeners hear the song in a new way, one of her many strengths.
A native of Newnan, Georgia, Allison Lowery is an only child and lived in the same house growing up. She attended The Heritage School where she excelled in art, guitar, voice, and performed with the show choir, a women’s trio, the women’s chorus, and the school cover band. Playing the part of Adelaide in “Guys and Dolls” she discovered her passion for musical theater, acting, and most of all, singing.
Lowery attended Lees McRae College in Banner Elk, NC, on the strength of their musical theater program. The 900-student college allowed her to pursue all aspects of musical theater and gain extensive experience on stages of college and professional theaters. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Performing Arts in 2006.
Allison cites the simplicity and truth of the lyrics in country music as one of the things that draw her in time and time again. There is so much passion expressed in these country songs, and her voice lets the simplicity and truth of the lyrics shine. The ability to express emotions people are experiencing through these songs makes them both cathartic and empowering to her. Country music enables its listeners to move from anger to longing, acceptance and finally healing. A good country song expresses what people are thinking and can’t get out, she reflects, and it’s hard not to sing along when you have that kind of connection. (By Susan Hunsinger)

Allison, I had the first chance to sit down today and listen to your songs. I just want youto know that you sound incredible and your songs are wonderful! Miss you!
Your songs helped me realease my emotions today. "Holding Your Hand" followed by "I'll Think Of You" allowed me to release tears that have been building. The love and positive outlook that my daughter has shown this week while in the hospital gave me a different perspective of listening to "I'll Think Of You". It easily could have been written to express how I feel about her right now. She's alive, sound of mind, and healing but listening to your songs have helped me to find an emotional release that I needed.
After being to a festival with Sugarland, Miranda Lambert, Dierks Bentley, Kenny Chesney, Blake Shelton, and Brooks & Dunn I realized that I prefer instead to sit back and relax and listen to you sing your songs.
