Los Angeles indie rock band ALSO formed in early 2003, with Drew Conrad on vocals/guitar, Mark Zelen on bass/keyboards, and Scotland Stephenson on drums. The three met through "Musicians Wanted" ads. Prior to this, each had played in numerous bands with notable levels of success, though evidently none of these situations were meant to last. Both Mark and Scotland relocated to Los Angeles from the east coast (Mark originally being from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Scotland from Athens, Georgia) each in an effort to find "the right band". Meanwhile, Los Angeles-born Conrad was on the seemingly endless quest to find talented, like-minded, responsible musicians. After several chats and rehearsals together, the three knew they had finally found the combination each had been looking for - a band with a similar musical taste who is as cohesive on stage as off. The music itself is catchy and intellectual, finding appreciative audiences both at home and abroad. According to New York Times best-selling author, John Skipp, their music "...is, to me, as good as f***ing songcraft gets."
The band's new album - It Was Fine To Be Kind - is receiving airplay on famed L.A. radio station KCRW 89.9 (instrumental in launching the careers of artists such as Coldplay, Badly Drawn Boy, Elbow, and Starsailor) as well as on L.A.'s The Indie 103.1 and on college stations in over 40 U.S. states. ALSO has opened for a number of national and international touring acts, including UK band The Alarm.
ALSO may be as yet an unsigned band, but that doesn’t keep them at home. The band independently booked and financed a tour of the UK in May 2005 and a tour of the UK, France, Germany, and the Czech Republic in March/April 2006. “The audiences in the UK and Europe have been extremely good to us. We will keep doing it as much as possible, even if it means going broke each time”, says Conrad. “It’s what we love to do and we are not going to sit around and wait to be discovered.”
ALSO has been invited to headline the second day of Le Roc Festival in France in Summer 2008. The band is taking the opportunity to turn this into European tour number 3!
