Prison Pretty and America's Sweetheart team-up in Jersey City
So I hate to leave a show before the headliner comes out because there's normally a good reason for the last band to be the Main Attraction. Tonight was no exception! America's Sweetheart geared up and jumped onto the stage. Trish (drums/vox) shifted the band into gear as they started their first song. Paris (bass/vox) and Val (rhythm guitar/vox) filled out the sound which was a mixed of riot grrl, country rock and punk. Did I forget anyone? Heck Yes, I did! Chris (lead guitar/vox), grummets and all, rocked the ax with a revenge so keen you'd have though Death Adder had killed his dwarven brother. If you missed the Golden Ax reference don't worry it just means you're under thirty and/or you lack concept. If I were to say that this band brought the rock in tablet form like Moses to the people of the valley worshiping the golden calf only moments before they were all smited by God.... well you'd probably say "Interesting use of imagery" perhaps you'd put a smiley face on the top of the blog with exclamation points, followed saying "Wow Zac, it's unsettling about how much you used theology to describe rock bands." So I'm not gonna say that but you can infer that what I would have said would have been quite a lot like that.

Canadian Music Week - LIVE America's Sweetheart
Sound Proof Magazine
http://soundproofmagazine.com/toronto/live/2007-03/15-AmericasSweethearts.htm
by Peter Bremner
One of the wonderful things about Canadian Music Week is the gracious acceptance of non-Canadian bands. It is in true Canuck fashion that we share our week with others, especially others that can rock. America's Sweetheart, hailing from the New York / New Jersey neck of the woods, is one of those bands that can not only rock, but one that has a great time doing it.
The intimate Rancho crowd of about 30 was treated to 45 minutes of charged-up sassy-ness with a hint of rockabilly that caused an influx of head-bopping throughout the cozy, but very accessible venue. The opening track, "Lazy Lady," set the mood with just the right amount of bounce. The unusual three-girls-to-one-boy ratio worked extremely well for this band.
The punch continued as the halfway mark of the 11-track set approached. The fourth song, "Want Your Smile," from the new record, Rainbow Party, was a crowd pleaser. With its delightfully trashy, howling chorus, "Boys. I like boys" brought about the unmistakable echoes of a girly rock ensemble with a flood of energy. Three tracks following, "Cute But Dumb" (also from Rainbow Party) gave a taste of how catchy and playable the band can be, with its radio-friendly rhythms. If you like London, Ontario's The Weekend, this band will be of particular interest to you.
With some spring in their step, and plenty of smiles, America's Sweetheart played a show that was plain, old fun. This band works well when they're playing for an intimate crowd; they infused the right amount of life without scaring people away. That vibe seemed to be exactly what the band was going for, and by the time guitarist CT took the mic for the title track "Rainbow Party" towards the end of the set, his vocals broke things up a bit, and widened the smiles on the faces of the patrons.
With a good use of harmonies and a wonderful ability to keep things moving, America's Sweetheart is a band that was an absolute treat to see at CMW. Keep a look out for them . . . they'll be around.

These ladies are not just pale imitators. Their songs are melodically sharp and lyrically playful. Fantastic stuff. Love the music, love the lyrics...”

America's Sweetheart
Not to be confused with the famous widow whose new album stole their name, this Brooklyn all-girl trio make truly sweet, artlessly bouncing three-chord speed-pop à la the Muffs or Fastbacks.

America's Sweetheart Review
Urban Mainstream Magazine
The music that comes from the band America's Sweetheart is full of energy that any music fan can appreciate. What's unique about this group is that all the members have a part in the vocals. You don't see that nowadays with bands as they only focus to just 1 vocalist. Like I said before, New York can really house musical talent and I stand corrected with America's Sweetheart. America's Sweetheart will be touring many cities across the United States so I would keep a look out for them. If you want to reach them for information about their songs or cd's you can reach them on their myspace at www.myspace.com/americassweetheartnyc

See Girls Rock! See Girls Rule!

Story by: Judy Berman
Girls Rock And Girls Rule, an annual all-female rock tour organized by Revolutionary Records, will hold a benefit concert February 9 at Hank's Saloon in Brooklyn to support an East Coast 2008 jaunt. The fundraiser will feature all four core acts for this year's tour—the anti-folk stylings of Marisa Mini, new wavers RewBee, bubblegum punks Loki the Grump, straight-ahead femme-rockers G-spot—as well as new acts Swati and Americas Sweetheart.
"We need a kick start so that we can keep this thing going," says Girls Rock And Girls Rule founder Gail Silverman, who also moonlights as the lead singer of G-spot. "We're excited about the show. We like to bring in new bands as much as we can and give them that exposure."
The tour began as a one-time event in 2002, but by 2007 Girls Rock And Girls Rule was showcasing over 35 female musicians in 12 cities. "It's been incredibly empowering," says Silverman, who also heads Revolutionary Records. "A lot of the bands who are involved in it haven't toured before."
As if that weren't inspiring enough, Girls Rock And Girls Rule donates a portion of its proceeds each year to non-profit organizations that help women and girls. Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls, a summer day camp in New York that teaches girls ages eight to 18 how to rock out while fostering tolerance and self-esteem, was last year's beneficiary.

Durham's own Pink Flag is taking part in a major benefit this Sunday at Local 506. PF fills us in on the details.
D: Tell us about the Girls Rock Girls Rule tour. It looks like seven bands performing. Isn't that a lot to fit into a single evening?
PF: GRGR is sort of a dual purpose tour. On the one hand, GRGR is a showcase for local bands like Pink Flag and PATC, which allows them to play at a larger local venue with more seasoned touring acts like G-Spot, Loki the Grump, RewBee, Marisa Mini & The Underage Hotties and America's Sweetheart and in front of A&R reps from label. GRGR also provides all of the artists with pretty valuable promotion packages, subscriptions and publicity opportunities. On the other hand, it places a spotlight on women in rock and helps to highlight the beneficiary of the show: Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls, a New York City-based non-profit summer day camp serving girls ages 8-18. The program offers girls the chance to learn how to play musical instruments, write songs, perform and generally "rock out" in a supportive environment that fosters self-confidence, self-esteem, creativity, tolerance and collaboration.
America's Sweetheart (NYC) Three girls and one boy who will try almost anything (Val on guitar, Trish on drums, Paris on bass & CT on lead guitar); Hailing from NYC, America's Sweetheart's sound is like a sexy flashback to the hot rock of the 70's and 80's. Some compare the band to Blondie, The B-52's and The Breeders, but the band has their own distinct sound. Expect charged up sassiness with trashy, howling choruses and unmistakable echoes of a girl rock ensemble. America's Sweetheart always hits the stage with a flood of energy and undeniably catchy, sing-along, radio-friendly songs. With titles like "Rainbow Party," "Cute But Dumb," and "Liquid Center," the Sweethearts aim to please not just the go-go girl in you but the bad girl in you too!
