Ancient Victory Review: BRED TO JAM, vol 2, issue 3 Aug 2009 -
Tom Wilson Studio, Belfair, WA, www.nooners85@hotmail.com.
This is a community project of love. A group of songwriters in the Belfair/Union area put their original songs on the line for the Mason Co. Food Banks. This includes a couple of Ancient Victory folks, Mike Coucoules & his song “She Dances” w/ a Latin feel, where Mike is on vocals, rhythm & lead guitar, bass & harmonica. This has a wonderful light dancing modern quality & Mike is an accomplished musician. Many of these writers play & converge on the Robin Hood Pub, Union, Hwy 106 on Wednesdays. Producer & engineer Tom Wilson was the focal point for the project w/ him supporting all fifteen songs on keyboards, effects, bass, percussion, & vocals. Besides Mike, Chris Anderson has a song he has performed on our stage, “The Light”. Chris is on guitar & vocal w/ Wilson on BG vocals and lead. Anderson delivers typical smooth warm clarity in the guitar picking opening and then sharp bite down lyric delivery. The song is about what happens when you let go & how the light comes into your life. Very well delivered & maybe the best production of the collection. Anderson also supplies tasty back up and lead guitar on Justin Stang’s “Days Spent”. Other songwriters are Jesse Noll, Cody Goodwin, Steve Anzalone, Robert Pool (Project Coordinator), Steve Madsen, George Stenberg & Lindsey Jackson. A decent collection for a good cause.

“FRIENDS” NEED YOUR SUPPORT NOW MORE THAN EVER
In December, a survey released by the U.S. Conference of Mayors reported a 15% increase in Seattle homelessness over 2007, and the problem is expected to worsen this year. People who DONATED FOOD in the past NOW ARE TURNING UP AT FOOD BANKS THEMSELVES, said Jared Erlandson, spokesman for UNITED WAY of King County.

The Songmakers in order of appearance, Steve Madsen, Mike Coucoules, Chris Anderson, Tom Wilson, George Stenberg, Lindsey Jackson, Jesse Noll, Cody Goodwin, Justin Stang, Steve Anzalone, and Robert Poole own the songs on this album. You folks were the rhythm of this project…the flavor and timbre, the message and the light. Our vocalist and new mother, Shannon Stanton kisses this album on both ends…you could say she is the glue that shrink wraps this amazing collection of musical magic in her extraordinary voice.

“And the Grammy Clive, for best new artist, from Union, Washington…the envelope please…”
_________________________________________________________________
Every Wednesday night at the Robinhood Restaurant and Lounge in Union you will find local songwriters entertaining a packed house. These artists spend countless hours wood-shedding (practicing) their material, honing their talent, and sharpening their skills, all for the show; people who write lyrics about life, joy, sadness, death and reality, songs with meaning, songs that speak to the heart and soul.
________________________________________________________________
Tom Wilson approached the host of the Wednesday night jam, Robert Poole last March with a proposal; a “CD” project comprised of donated material from a dozen talented and local songwriters. The proposal involved raising money by selling the CD for $15.00 through local retail outlets with all net proceeds slated for the four Mason County Food Banks. A percentage from each sale would be held for remanufacture. The CD will then be self-sustaining.
________________________________________________________________
Twelve artists stepped forward to donate their talent, time and material to this project and Tom Wilson owning a 24 track digital recording studio was certainly helpful. The resulting CD titled, “BRED TO JAM FOR BREAD” is a diverse compilation of original material that surges in a poetry of sound and unimaginably exceeds the sum of its parts.

I was unable to use one song due to paperwork. The decision to replace the song was entirely mine. I have communicated my apology to the artist and I have reserved him a spot on album2. He has my word...if I have his paper.
________________________________________________________________
The 15 SONGS listed below are on the CD. A short bio of represented songwriters is included.
________________________________________________________________
WEDNESDAY NIGHT AT THE HOOD: Steve Madsen is a rare talent. Steve was clever enough to come up with Wednesday Night at the Hood as the CD’s official theme song. The lead vocal is superbly crafted by Shannon Stanton and is nothing short of pure magic.
________________________________________________________________
SHE DANCES: Mike Coucoules is solid, 'in the pocket' and in demand. Mike is a true pro and is directly in the center of the music business in Tacoma. Mike has performed with The Smoke and Blues All Stars, Karl Thurmond, Steve Cooley, Loose Gravel and The Malcolm Clark Band. Mike is guest host at the Robinhood every six weeks or so. Do not miss him if you get the opportunity.
________________________________________________________________
THE LIGHT: Chris Anderson is an accomplished songwriter & musician with six LPs to his credit. Chris has performed throughout the northwest and nationally for thirty years. His duo, Anderson and Skok found success with their tune, “High Flying Bird” from the LP, “In and Out of Rhyme”. The duo also placed a tune on the KEZX second album project. Chris has opened for Donavan, Phoebe Snow, Michael Tomlinson, Danny O'Keefe, Jesse Winchester, Bruce Hornsby, Suzanne Vega, Jessie Colon Young and America.
________________________________________________________________
SYMPHONY: Tom Wilson has performed in regional venues for over forty years. Tom is an accomplished songwriter, musician and published author with one-hundred songs, two singles, nine albums, and three books to his credit including the “Manly Adventures and Other Delusions” series. Tom produced, engineered, mixed and mastered, “BRED TO JAM FOR BREAD”.
________________________________________________________________
THE STORM: Steve contribution a second song to the CD called “THE STORM” about the recent hurricane and flooding disaster in New Orleans. His lyrics paint this almost biblical and certainly political tragedy in grassroots realism. Steve will draw you right into the disaster with his mesmerizing vocal.
________________________________________________________________
ALL I WANNA DO IS: George Stenberg wrote this tune that simplistically states one of life's fundamental truths, not necessarily with words that have never been spoken, but with the way his melody and timing set the line up as the perfect “Hook.” Sometimes simple is best.
________________________________________________________________
DAVID’S DAILY DINNER: Lindsey Jackson has a distinctive approach to songwriting and her unique vocal style sets her well apart from the crowd. Her performances are riveting and distinctive. Hear Lindsey Jackson with her posse in person at the Robinhood Lounge on Wednesday evenings. You will surely find the experience a treat.
________________________________________________________________
BY AND BY MY LOVE: Tom Wilson wrote this song while observing the stylings of one Roy Orbison. "The way he circled the chords and built the song using his vocal."
________________________________________________________________
MORNING SUN: Jesse Noll writes and performs in a style reminiscent of Robert Johnson as he slips and slides the blues right into the anxious ears of everyone in the room. Jesse's voice could melt butter in December. Hearing Jesse Noll slippin' and a slidin' is a special experience you will not want to miss.
________________________________________________________________
BATHE YOUR SOUL: Cody Goodwin packs the power of his tune into this CD with a reggae/ska style that initially seems a contrast. As you will clearly hear, this song is actually an integral part of the glue that elevates this project to a special level. Cody’s music vibrates with the resounding energy of youth. Keep your ears on Cody Goodwin and one eye on your woman.
________________________________________________________________
DAYS SPENT: Justin Stang contributed this beautifully touching piece of work. His guttural, sexy voice leaves the ladies feeling warm, cozy and ready to dance the night away. Justin's band, Sideways Reign, occasionally performs at the Robinhood. Cody Goodwin is also a member of the band. Check around for word of Sideways Reign playing in town. You will not be disappointed.
________________________________________________________________
DANGEROUS TIME: Steve Anzalone donated this tuneto the project. In this poignant social commentary Steve captures life's ups and downs from a different perspective taking the listener for a rolling ride through local culture. His vocal inflections are innovative and unique. Steve is slated to be on album number two and I look forward to having him back in the studio and to the magic that will surely follow.
________________________________________________________________
JUDGMENT DAY - Another donation from Jesse Noll. If you had any doubts whatsoever about Jesse's ability to slip and slide Robert Johnson style this tune will definetly put your doubts to rest.
________________________________________________________________
STAY ON: Robert “Rob” Poole is and songwriter and musician who is also the “Bred to Jam for Bread” Project Coordinator and the venerable Host of the Wednesday Night Robinhood Lounge Jam. Rob's contribution to this CD will draw you in with its cool flowing groove.
________________________________________________________________
WEDNESDAY NIGHT AT THE HOOD ENCORE: Tom Wilson wrote new lyrics for Steve Madsen’s chords and melody and their first co-written tune was born. The encore, again featuring a sweet vocal expertly crafted by Shannon Stanton serves to finalize the album and puts the punctuation mark on the homogenous musical journey of, “Bred to Jam for Bread”.
________________________________________________________________
BOTTOM LINE:
Local musicians, songwriters, artists, producers and engineers have donated over $40,000 in time, effort and expertise to create this truly amazing piece of work. Release date of the hard copy is slated for 18 December of 2008.
