Based in Huntsville, AL, Kozmic Mama has become one of the Southern U.S.'s most popular acts after forming in 1991.
Carla Russell's soulful vocals front an incredibly adept band consisting of Matt Shook, Bobby Love, Mike Fontenot, and Jimmy Clay. Shook and Love comes from Atlanta, GA while Fontenot comes from New Orleans, LA. Clay is from Huntsville, Al. Russell grew up in Europe. They play everything from blues, soul, r&b, to rock with fire, passion, and unbridled soul.
Carla Russell-Lead Vocals
Russell's military dad was transferred to Huntsville, AL when she was a teenager. The base was only 50 miles from Muscle Shoals, AL, the home of Fame Records. She started singing with a local band called Pressure and built a reputation as a serious blue-eyed soul singer. Her style and phrasing remind you of Mavis Staples, Janis Joplin and Aretha Franklin.
Matt Shook-Keyboards, Vocals Shook played with Derek St. Holmes band
Shook and Jones played with the rock band Fragile.
Bobby Jones-Drums, Vocals
Mike Fontenot-Guitars, Vocals
Fontenot and Clay toiled with the King Cotton Blues Band.
Jimmy Clay-Bass Guitar, Vocals Clay played with "Cornelius Brothers and Sister Rose" and "Baker and Myers"
The band keeps busy playing an assortment of festivals including the W.C. Handy Music Festival, the Alabama Blues and Jazz Festival, the Down Home Blues Festival, the Blues Stock, and the Big Spring Jam. They're a feature at The Station Pub in Madison Al and gig at other regional clubs as well. Though the band may be a secret to everyone except the South, things may soon change.
