Tom Howell. The rest of the band, who are all at least as nerdy as I am, are: producers Nicola Luksic and Andrew Kaufman, and the host, Russell Smith. Really... Russell Smith, now there's a nerd... he doesn't even hang out on myspace...
Influences
In Our Times, Big Ideas, I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue, Wiretap, Just a Minute, DNTO, Monty Python's Flying Circus, The Adventure of English, David Crystal, the Oxford English Dictionary, Katherine Barber... and the letter Y.
Sounds Like
the show's host is Russell Smith. He sounds like he wears a monocle. I'm the show's sidekick. I sound like I'm much smarter than Russell. Oh, and then there are various guests. They sound like the charming, opinionated, articulate people they are.
"And Sometimes Y" is CBC Radio's weekly show about the English language. The 2007 series airs between January and June, every Saturday at 11:30 a.m., on Radio One. (It gets repeated on Tuesday mornings at 11:30.)
The host, Russell Smith, has taken to calling me the show's in-house 'word nerd' because I used to write dictionary definitions for a living, and because I make him play the word games I devise, such as the Robertson Davies Challenge, which is a guessing game based on the archaic and obscure words that Robertson Davies threw into all his novels.
Anyway. If you don't live in Canada, you can still hear And Sometimes Y, either on the website (www.cbc.ca) or on Sirius Satellite 137.

I want to say 'whither the photo with the hat?' for the alliterative qualities, but I realise I actually know the answer (in fact, the photo has not gone very far) -- but that hat! It had panache! And I miss it.
I think that The Word Nerd's Apprentice is exactly the kind of reality TV that CBC *should* be making, if it really insists on making reality TV shows.
I was really excited to discover that you exist. Well, maybe not so much you as your office: Word Nerd.
Can I please apprentice? I promise to pay my guild dues!
The last time I heard "dross" in a song it was Everything But the Girl's "When All's Well, " which, like your "The Alphabet Song, " is also very enjoyable. More to the point, if you've never heard any John Linnell, you might quite like it, especially the one about James Polk.
Anyway, nice songs, WN. Have a nice night.

Am I playing Teatro? Of course!! Unless...oh, are you going to be there? Uh... I think I might have other plans actually...my racoon has hepatitis and...I have that thing, you know...my niece is getting divorced and...the ottoman I'm building is at a critical stage and...that havarti I bought is rotting...Oh, what the hell-you're not the WORST person to play a gig with.
Looking forward to it.
Uh, you're not gonna bring your keyboard, are you?
