Hi! I’m Stolie, open mic hostess comin’ atcha from the northwest side of Chicago. In the fall of 2005, I started hosting an open mic at Wrigleyville bar Murphy's Bleachers in an effort to help draw a regular drinking crowd. With $10 buckets of Bud, it certainly did, but it also drew a regular crowd of really awesome musicians and became sort of a reunion every week for this group of new friends bonded by their love for playing, learning and sharing music.
So, this page is here as a way for all of us to continue this open mic community beyond the bars! If you know of an open mic that's not listed here, please email it to stolie@stolie.com.
The drill is different at every bar, but generally, plan to arrive earlier than start time to sign up. Sometimes there's a monitor, sometimes not. Sometimes there's a house guitar, sometimes not. Typically an open mic allows 3 songs, but depending on attendance, this can vary. Get in touch with the venue or host before you go to a new open mic to get the low-down, or just get there early.
Here's a list of douchey things to do at an open mic!
Ask to be moved up on the list.
Don't clap after other performers play.
Fiddle with the PA when the host is not looking.
Spill your beer on the monitor.
Medley your last song into another to get 5 more minutes of play-time.
Scold everyone in the room for not paying enough attention to you.
Write inappropriate comments or drawings next to people's names on the sign-up sheet.
Stolie, I had a blast playing for you last night! I LOVE Hops and Barley! Great place, and you are awesome. Thank you so much, would love to do it again in the spring.
