About me:
Ultimately, I'm just a huge fan of all middle-grade and YA fiction, and especially of fantasy literature, which is why I wrote this book. It has been dubbed "the mother of all research papers," only it was a lot more fun than any high-school or college research paper I ever wrote! It took me about a year to research the book, and then close to another year to write it. While writing, I sat at my very large desk, with my laptop situated in the middle and books spread all around...mythology books and encyclopedias, the Bible and several Biblical reference books, history and science books, literary dictionaries, the works of every major fantasy writer to date, Latin and French dictionaries, plus my filing system that detailed every spell, potion, setting, and the like from the six existing Harry Potter novels. Books were constantly getting pushed off the edge of the desk, and many a bill, letter, and card got lost during that year! The book was then edited, designed, and set aside, and as soon as the seventh HP novel hit the stores, I was at it again, writing a final chapter on the seventh novel. We plopped that chapter into the book and rushed it off to the printer. This book delves into the detail of J.K. Rowling's magical world without revealing too much about plots, settings, and characters. Copyright law limited the scope of this book (note Rowling's recent lawsuit over The Harry Potter Lexicon's encyclopedia)...I kept wanting to include far more detail; Penguin's Legal Department kept asking me to rewrite chapters to meet copyright law. In the end, Legal won every battle, but I'm glad they kept me on my toes. The illustrator, editors, and technical reviewers also did a phenomenal job in making me look good...I swear they all did far more work than I did. Suffice it to say, writing and researching this book was a great gig.
Who I'd like to meet:
J.K. Rowling, of course! But also Ursula Le Guin, Diana Wynne Jones, Christopher Paolini, Eoin Colfer, and in the afterlife, C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien. Plus just about any Harry Potter fan out there.
