HeroesCalifornia Relay for Education

As many of you know the California Dream Act (SB 1301) is dear and close to our hearts. The California Dream Act would allow California undocumented students to be eligible to compete for institutional financial aid.

What is institutional financial aid? Scholarships, loans, and work-study money that gets distributed on two accounts- 1) academic merit and, 2) financial need. These monies are alloted as the end result of all students paying their tuition. In fact- 33% of accumulated tuition fees become institutional financial aid.

Undocumented students in the state only make 1% of the student body population in public colleges and universities. These students contribute over $64million a year through tuition alone and less than 20% (of the 1% aforementioned) would be eligible to receive this aid. Would you please support the CA Dream Act by signing our online petition?

Immigration Conference

June 1-3 2008
Titan Student Union
California State University, Fullerton
Fullerton, California

About the Conference

As an education community, there is an intent need to build a national effort that informs and focuses educators and advocacy groups on the serious challenges that immigrant students and their families face in gaining access to a higher education.

The inability of lawmakers to find workable policy consensus on the complex issue of immigration has been tragic; keeping very talented young people from enrolling in postsecondary education in the United States. As educators, if we fail to discuss and address this issue, our biggest failure will be the continual denial of college access to capable and qualified students. These young people need the chance to succeed and a college education would give them this opportunity.

The heart of this intended effort is to stimulate a national conversation with educators on the opportunities and challenges inherent in the issue of immigration. This work began with an invited conference at the University of Michigan in June 2007 and this gave rise to the development of a potentially powerful network of well situated educators and advocates across the United States. We now seek to extend this network and establish a strategic agenda for institutions of higher education.

The Cal State Fullerton conference is the second in a minimum of five national conferences over the next 18-24 months in states identified as having a significant stake in issues of immigration. These conferences will further a national dialogue in one of the most impacted regions with regard to immigration and access to higher education. The conferences are aimed at strengthening the knowledge base among educators about the intersecting issues of immigration and educational access, and on setting strategic policies regarding educational access within institutions and across the states.

By engaging college presidents, community leaders, state higher education officers, legislators, students and researchers, the proposed conferences will have the potential to:

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

1.
Build a common foundation of our current knowledge on immigration and the social, cultural and economic impact it is having within and outside of the United States; Clarify and share information with policymakers and citizens on what is at stake for students, communities, higher education institutions, and society in the current immigration debate;

2.
Strengthen the connection between relevant research, institutional practice and policy; Form collaborative partnerships between policymakers, established and rising scholars, and grassroots organizations;

3.
Develop policy recommendations and organizational initiatives that address the challenges and the opportunities of the immigration issue at the national, state, institutional and community organization levels and;

4.
Create a sustainable working agenda and put into action participant recommendations that identify the roles and responsibilities of individuals and institutions that will continue to promote an understanding of and a strong commitment to immigrant communities.

JUST ANNOUNCED!!!
MACHETERO ACCEPTED TO THE
BLACK HOLLYWOOD FILM FESTIVAL
JUNE 3rd @ 3:00PM $12
Laemmle Music Hall (Theater 1)
9036 Wilshire Blvd. Beverly Hills CA 90211

MACHETERO
written and directed by vagabond
produced by resister and vagabond
starring Isaach de Bankolé, Not4Prophet, Kelvin Fernandez and Dylcia Pagan
original songs and score by RICANSTRUCTION

Post 9/11 definitions, ideas and notions of terrorism are challenged in this highly controversial and experimental film. Machetero is an allegorical narrative that follows French journalist Jean Dumont played by Isaach de Bankolé (The Keeper, Ghost Dog, Coffee and Cigarettes, Manderlay) to a New York prison where he interviews Pedro Taino a so called "Puerto Rican Terrorist" played by Not4Prophet (lead singer of the Puerto Punk band RICANSTRUCTION). Pedro is a self-described Machetero fighting to free Puerto Rico from the yoke of US colonialism. He is obsessed with freedom, freedom for his country, his people and for himself. Jean questions Pedro about his decisions to use violence as a means to achieve that freedom.

As Jean and Pedro speak, another story unfolds. A ghetto youth played by Kelvin Fernandez (in his first starring role) grows up in the ghetto streets and crosses paths with Pedro. Pedro reawakens a revolutionary spirit instilled in the ghetto youth from childhood by a mentor in Puerto Rico played by former Puerto Rican Prisoner of War Dylcia Pagan (who did 20 years in federal US prisons for her belief that Puerto Rico should be free). Pedro tries to provide the means for the ghetto youth to grow into the next generation of Machetero.

The film is structured around songs from the album, “Liberation Day” written and preformed by RICANSTRUCTION. The songs are interwoven into the film as a narrative voice and the band is utilized as a modern Greek chorus.
RICANSTRUCTION also provides an original improvised score that moves from hardcore be-bop punk to layered, ha
