Sounds Like
I try to sound like myself, but of course I have been influenced by many masters and I wish to acknowledge them all without claiming to actually sound like any of them.
------------------ NEW CD BOOTLEG BYRNE NOW AVAILABLE ------------------ Communication...that's what drew me into music...the language of the soul and the body and the heart. I started improvising the instant I got a sax at 13 and played my first payin' gig that year. I could always wail. For a while I could only play by ear because I couldn't think and groove at the same time. Getting my PhD in math seemed to integrate my right and left brain and I stopped being intimidated by the analytic aspects of music. It also got me onto the faculty at PSU where I have been Faculty Advisor to the Jazz Club since 1989, producing about 60 concerts with the students and meeting scores of awesome musicians, many of whom became life long friends and continue to refer me to new musicians or help me with my music. Many of my students also became lifelong friends.
I studied composition with Jaki Byard and set out to write more music that I could play well but my tunes all took on a life of their own and I ended up writing stuff so hard I couldn't even do justice to it myself. Fortunately I've always surrounded myself with band mates who forever bring me to a higher level of playing.
When I was 20 I already felt like a nobody when I listened to hot-shot 17 year olds who played circles around me. Then I decided, if they can get that good in 4 years, I can certainly get that good in 15 or 20 years, and I'll probably live to be 80, so I just stopped watching the clock and settled in to a lifetime project of making the best music I can. It has been a joyous and fulfilling ride so far and I'm less than half way through. That's the cool thing about music....you can really keep getting better 'til you die, relying more on wisdom and less on brawn as time goes by, though at 47 I still thrive on the intense burn....but like sex it's better when you get there slowly....milking each subtle crescendo for all it's worth before the grand explosion.
I started young raising kids so now they are gigging with me, and doing economics, philosophy, poetry and composing music. Keely and Grace dance...African, Freestyle, Ballet, Modern, Tap, everything...Adrienne plays flute and keyboards and sings, and Gracie plays some trombone, keys and sings. Fatherhood is my ultimate avocation - but the best way to raise kids is to let them see you live your life...let them see how you make yourself into who you want to be...so I never had to give anything up for them...at least I never thought of it that way...on the contrary I had to realize my dreams so they would see how to realize theirs. I brought them along for the ride and we've all enjoyed it together. I invite you to enjoy it with us....just give me a gig and I'll take you to visit the good life....that's the transcendence of music.
thanks for the friendship. A warm welcome to my circle of friends.
