About me: I have been an advocate for youth and education for more than twenty years.
My formal studies include Geography, Education Administration, Learning Theory,
Education Philosophy, African-American Studies, African-Centered Rites of Passage,
HIV/AIDS Prevention Instruction, and Cultural Diversity. Professionally, I
have worked with “at-risk” youth
as a Prevention Specialist, and in higher education as an Admissions Counselor for Minority Recruitment, a Director of Cultural Programming, and Associate Dean for Multicultural Affairs.
Currently, I am the founding Director of the African American Male Research Center and Assistant Professor of Educational Leadership at University of North Carolina Wilmington. Also,
I am on the planning committee for the annual Black
Male Development Symposium hosted by Village Builders, Inc. and
Arcadia University. For more information about the Black
Male Development Symposium visit www.blackmaledevelopment.com.
As a scholar, I am examining the relationships between socialization, learning
theories and academic achievement. Particularly, using the African-centered
rites of passage model as a framework for educators to better understand where
students are in their development and what services and activities would be
appropriate. My experiences are complemented by extensive travel throughout
the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, Mexico, The Netherlands, Australia,
The U.S. Virgin Islands, Panama, and Africa in the countries of Senegal, Benin,
Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia and Ghana.
Who I'd like to meet: I would like to network with people who are concerned about:
1. Empowering youth and activism (civic engagement)
2. The study and practice of African-centered rites of passage
3. Education reform
4. "Authentic" and conscious raising Hip-Hop and spoken work
5. African-Centered Thought and Philosophy
6. Multiculturalism and diversity
7. African American student achievement
8. Spiritual Development (Jesus-centered)
(no significance in order!)
If you are a person committed to the development, practice, study of African-centered Rites of Passage or just want to learn more about it, consider joining:

Good morning Dr. Doggins, came by to make a stand. I want to stand by you as I would ask you to stand by me. Let's stand together with a United Front. Let's confirm the confirmation. "Sometime it's not about winning but standing, standing for what one perceive as right. For if you are right how can one make you wrong but if you are wrong you must make it right." Booker
