   About FCC Hip Hop Workshop

The FCC Hip-Hop Workshop is based out of the Filipino Community Center in the Excelsior District of San Francisco and is a project organized by A.L.A.Y. (Active Leadership to Advance the Youth).

The mission of the workshop is to engage its participants to talk about and address issues in their community through hip hop music and culture. We believe that hip hop is a powerful tool that connects the diverse group of youth that we work with.

Objectives

  • To raise participants’ awareness of community history, identity, and issues through dialogue and creative expression
  • To identify and discuss the current and evolving needs of communities we work with, and transform those discussions into hip hop music
  • To write, record, and distribute a full-length compilation CD of music created during the workshop
  • Develop the participants’ critical thinking, writing, recording, performance, and hustling skills

  •    FCC Hip Hop Workshop's Friend Space (Top 24)

:: Q-York joins forces with Gawad Kalinga ::

Q-York has joined forces with Gawad Kalinga as advocates to get the youth involved in helping transform the Philippines from a 3rd world country to a 1st world country. Q-York will be performing at the grand concert early 2008 in San Diego with major acts such as the Black Eyed Peas, Philippine Allstars and many others. Also, this summer 2008 we are going to bring 1000 Americans to the Philippines to help build homes for the poor. We would love for all of you to join us in building a legacy and more importantly helping those less fortunate. If you are interested in joining us please e-mail Gawad Kalinga at: info@gk777sd.com. Let'em know Q-York sent you!

Master Donongan Kalanduyan is the only expert on southern Filipino music living in the United States. Kulintang music finds its roots almost entirely in a small Muslim region of the southern Philippines, but existed before both the Muslim and the Hispanic influences. In this talk, Master Danongan Kalanduyan will discuss the roots of Kulintang, connecting with Filipino American culture through ancient tribal traditions, and the legacy of the curriculum he built as an Academe.

Kalanduyan earned his graduate degree in ethnomusicology at the University of Washington, Seattle, where he remained as an artist-in-residence for many years. In 1990, he served as a master artist in the California state apprenticeship program. In 1995, Kalanduyan was awarded the prestigious National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. Currently a lecturer at San Francisco State University, Kalanduyan is also the leader of the Palabuniyan Kulintang Ensemble. He has been a featured artist in performances at such major venues as the Hollywood Bowl (with the Los Angeles Philharmonic), the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Kennedy Center, and countless concerts and festivals throughout the United States.
