| About FearOfHatred |
Phase One:
FearOfHatred started in 1996 when school friends Steve Cowan and Steve Robinson started learning
guitar together. Both shared a love of thrash metal of the era (Metallica, Sacred Reich, Megadeth,
Testament etc). Steve Robinson was also into hard-rock, whilst Steve Cowan ventured into the realms
of industrial and death metal. In 1995 Steve Cowan started writing songs in an industrial vein, intended
for them to be recorded on fourtrack. A big influence on the writing at this time was Ipswich-based outfit
Optimum Wound Profile. The finished songs ended up sounding nothing like this, but there were trace
elements of the influence. In 1996 the two Steves were approached by a local record store owner (Alan
from Radio City) to appear on BBC Radio Lincolnshire and have two tracks played with an interview
segment. The 2 song demo was recorded and mixed with minutes to spare (literally) and on the car
journey to the station, the two Steves realised that the band had no name. Steve Cowan's fondness for
both EyeHateGod and Fear Factory inspired the name FearOfHatred. Paul Sims conducted the
interview, which was a neat little insight to the first rung on the musical ladder. Later that year an
album of demos was recorded. A couple of months later FearOfHatred split.
Phase Two
In 2005, after a period of writing folk and electronica music, Steve Cowan started writing heavy music
again. Sadly, Steve Robinson had moved on, so this was very much a solo project. An e.p. was
recorded ('Unrelent') and released on-line. Later in the year an album was recorded ('The Year Of
Hydrogen'). This album was met with positive reviews in the on-line community, and by Zero Tolerance
Magazine. In early 2006, part-way through the recording of the sophomore album ('Theft Of The Night
Sky') Craig Furniss joined the band as lead guitarist/vocalist. Craig contributed writing to this album
and, again, this was met with favourable reviews. With plenty of tracks now written, the duo decided to
turn their attention to playing gigs. It was decided early on that drum loops and synths would be
utilised, therefore negating the need for a drummer. ICE was recruited on bass guitar in mid-2006,
followed shortly by Korin on vocals and mixing. This line-up performed just 4 gigs during 2007, which
were met with positive feedback. Tracks were written for both an e.p. ('Songs For The Season Of
Autumn') and an album ('Hyperion' - based upon the poem by Keats). Sadly, the band split once again
in mid-2007 due to the lack of interest from Steve Cowan. The e.p. was released on-line in demo form,
whilst the album was never finished.
Phase Three
In early 2008, Korin approached the three member of FearOfHatred separately and asked if they would
consider reforming. All three agreed, and work went under-way for a new series of e.p.s ('The Ember
Chronicles Parts I and II') and a 'farewell' gig in August of 2008. Soon after, it was decided to make this
less a farewell scenario, and agree to keep the band going, but on less of a priority for each member.
Craig's main focus is playing bass guitar in local legends 'Dead Sentinel'. Steve and ICE are both active
with 'The Naira Project'. Finally, Korin is challenging audiences with his electro project 'Korrosiv'. In
June 2008 Steve was advised to discontinue playing guitar for 8 weeks due to a wrist injury. Therefore,
for the gig (Steve's e.p. recording work was already done at this point), Paul Etcell from PlaguesFire
was recruited as rhythm guitarist. FearOfHatred will not disband again, although it is very much a
side-project band now.
