About me: My name is Tessie Goheen and I am working on opening a cancer resource center in Kitsap County. My father died of cancer when I was eight years old (1996). Five years later, my sister Katie was diagnosed with cancer and three years after that, my sister Becky, was diagnosed as well. Katie had an osteosarcoma in her jaw, went through chemotherapy and had 18 hour surgery to remove the jaw and reconstruct. Becky had a synovial cell sarcoma underwent chemotherapy, radiation, and has had a bilateral mastectomy. We tested positive for a very rare and unique genetic mutation, Li-Fraumeni Syndrome that gave us an 80-85% chance of developing cancer. What makes this syndrome so unique is that unlike other cancer markers and genetic conditions; Li-Fraumeni Syndrome can strike any part of the body at any time. In June, I tested positive for breast cancer at 20 years old. I had to leave school at Pacific Lutheran University and move home to receive treatment. I am currently undergoing treatment in Bremerton, WA.
After being diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 20, I realized there weren't as many opportunities for young adult cancer patients within the community and have decided to open up a local cancer resource center. The center will provide information and support to people battling this disease and survivors of cancer. It will be an environment where they can come to rest, relax, look up information, meet with other patients and feel supported in their battle. Please read the blogs for more information. If you would like more information please send me a message or e-mail me at goheencancercenter@gmail.com. If you would like to donate please reference the WHAT WE NEED Blog or stop by any Washington Mutual Branch to deposit directly into the account Teresa Goheen Cancer Center Fund, account number: 35809 89968. Thank You!
Who I'd like to meet: Cancer patients of all ages and ethnicities. Families, friends, and loved ones who want more information to help support their cancer survivor or patient.
