The Heartland Community Flute Choir (HCFC) was founded in 2003 by Christine Beard and is co-sponsored by the University of Nebraska at Omaha, the Nebraska Flute Club, and Gemeinhardt/Gemstone Musical Instruments. A non-auditioned ensemble boasting over 30 members, the HCFC plays on C flutes, piccolos, alto and bass flutes, and performs a variety of literature consisting of original works for flute choir and arrangements of classical masterpieces, as well as traditional and popular tunes.
Since its inception, the HCFC has captivated audiences across the state with its enchanting sonorities and diverse repertoire which has included three world premiere performances of new arrangements for flute choir. In addition to giving an average of four local concerts in and around Omaha each year, the HCFC was recently showcased at the Midwest Clinic: An International Band & Orchestra Conference in Chicago, IL in December 2009; the Nebraska Music Educators Association Convention in Lincoln, NE in November 2009; and the National Flute Association Convention held in Kansas City, MO in August 2008. Past highlights also include performances at Omaha's BEMIS festival (2008), the North Central Division MENC Conference (2006), the ARTSaha! Contemporary Music Festival (2006), and the Nebraska Music Educators Association Convention (2004).
The HCFC is available to perform at for a variety of social, professional, educational, and private events, and the size of the ensemble can be customized to fit your needs. Monetary donations help the ensemble purchase music, instruments, and equipment; help with travel expenses for concert tours; and/or to commission new music for flute choir from living composers.
Rehearsals take place 6:00-7:30pm on Tuesday evenings in the Strauss Performing Arts Center (PAC 109) on the UNO campus. Membership is open to adult amateur and professional flutists, as well as college and high school students (No beginners please!). College credit is available through UNO. No audition is required and new members are welcome at any time! Annual membership dues are $20 which includes an official HCFC polo shirt for concerts.
