SPRING VALLEY – A teenager who was killed in a crash in Flinn Springs on his way to football practice Wednesday was warmly remembered by staff and fellow players at Mount Miguel High School.
Joseph Isaiah Rojas, a 17-year-old senior, was well-respected by students and faculty at the Spring Valley school, said Mount Miguel Principal Steve Coover.
“He always had a smile on his face,” Coover recalled.
Rojas was killed about 7:15 a.m. when the Chevrolet Blazer he was riding in hit a Honda sedan that had flipped over the Interstate 8 median and landed in front of oncoming westbound traffic. The Honda had been going 75 to 80 mph on eastbound I-8 when the driver appeared to lose control, said California Highway Patrol Officer Brian Pennings.
The Blazer rolled six times. At least four other vehicles also collided and five other people were injured, Pennings said. Traffic was slowed for several hours as emergency crews removed the wreckage.
The driver of the Blazer, Jessica Perdomo, 35, of Alpine, was in critical condition, a San Diego hospital spokesman said. Four other people were treated for minor or moderate injuries, Pennings said.
