57-year-old Kathie Remick wins top prize in Health & Wealth Raffle
Elementary school teacher, Kathie Remick dedicates her time to helping others by volunteering at nonprofit organizations throughout the Valley. Little did Remick know that she was about to be the Grand Prize winner of the Fall Health & Wealth Raffle benefiting St. Joseph's Hospital and Barrow Neurological Institute.
Remick had been awake since 4:30 a.m. preparing for a large family get together later that evening. She and her husband, Bill, were about to sit down for lunch when Remick received the news from Kathy Rice, manager of the Health and Wealth Raffle, that she was the $1 million winner.
“I was in complete shock when I got the news that I was the Grand Prize winner,” said Remick. “They assured me it was not a prank call, but it was very difficult to believe at first. I never dreamed of winning anything this big.”
Remick has entered the Health & Wealth Raffle in the past but has never won one of the bigger prizes. After receiving the news, it took Remick a few minutes to believe she was Arizona's newest millionaire. She called her family to tell them about her luck, and her father was especially thrilled about the exciting news.
The first thing Remick plans to do with her winnings is help her brother by paying off his mortgage. Remick's brother suffers from Degenerative Disc Disease and has twice undergone surgery. Currently, he has a titanium rod in his back, and is constantly in pain. With Remick's winnings she hopes to relieve the financial burden for her brother and his family.
When Remick told her brother of her plans to pay off his mortgage, he protested and said he would be fine. She responded, “Well, now you are going to be better!”
Remick also plans to financially assist her mom and dad, who live in Sun City, with a few remodeling projects and to take her mom on a dream trip to Italy.

The Valley's first hospital has a remarkable history of firsts.
In 1895, the Sisters of Mercy opened St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center, the Valley's first hospital, to give desperately needed medical care to a community then in its infancy. Since then this extraordinary facility has brought hope, health and a long line of life-giving firsts to our vital, burgeoning community. Among our many historic milestones are:
The Valley's first Pediatric Department (1928), Multiple Sclerosis Clinic (1981) and Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (1988)
Arizona's first Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (1966), Pediatric ICU (1972), Stroke Unit (1983), and DNA Diagnostics Laboratory (1999)
The Southwest's first Neuroscience Center (Barrow Neurological Institute – 1962), Coronary Care Unit (1964) and Gamma Knife Center (1997)
In February of 2003, St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center launched the first mega home raffle of its kind in the United States. And the firsts continue…
2003 - First Thoracic Disease Center in Arizona
2003 - First Cyberknife in the Southwest
2003 - First Oral Health Collaborative in Arizona
2003 - First Hypothalamic Harmartoma Center in the United States
2005 - First Congenital Heart Center in the Valley providing lifelong care for people with heart defects
2006 - First Intraoperative MRI in a Hospital
2007 - First Lung Transplant Program in the Valley
2007 - First Pediatric Cardiothoracic ICU in Arizona
For 114 years, St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center has been first in providing Valley residents with the next generation of cutting-edge medical technology. With your generous support, we can continue our contributions of medical firsts well into the future.
